Ottavio Lurati (born May 5, 1938 in Chiasso ; resident in Croglio ) is a Swiss linguist ( Italian studies ).

Life

Lurati grew up with his older siblings Giacomo (* 1926), Pinuccia (* 1932) and Mariangela (* 1934) as the son of Giovanni Lurati (1893–1987) and Giannina nee Fantoni (1900–1985) in Chiasso. There he attended primary school, then middle school and high school in Lugano . He studied linguistics in Basel , Florence , Salamanca and Montpellier with well-known Romanists such as Walther von Wartburg , Toni Reinhard , Germán Colón , Carl Theodor Gossen and Italian linguists such as Bruno Migliorini and Giacomo Devoto . In 1963 he was at the University of Basel with the dissertation Terminologia e usi pastorizi di val Bedretto doctorate . He then worked for five years at the Liceo cantonale Lugano as a teacher of Italian and Dante's writings.

He was a member of various federal commissions such as the commission for the preparation of the new Art. 116 of the Swiss Federal Constitution (1996, language article, today Art. 70) as well as the Swiss National Science Foundation and Pro Helvetia . From 1970 to 2010 he was editor of the Quaderni internazionali di semantica (Bologna) and has been editor of the RIOn - Rivista italiana di onomastica (Rome) and its international scientific commission since 1970 . From 1986 to 1989 he was President of the Collegium Romanicum , the association of Swiss Romanists. He is a member of various national and international juries, including the Quadernos gallegos de Fraseologia , and scientific advisor to the Lessico etimologico italiano , which is being developed at the University of Saarbrücken and currently (2017) comprises 13 volumes.

In 2016 he was appointed one of the five foreign academic correspondents of the Accademia della Crusca . He is a member of other scientific commissions.

career

From 1968 to 1974 Lurati was assistant for Romance philology ( history of the French language , Old French , Old Italian , Dante lectures) with Theodor Gossen at the Romance Seminar in Basel. He was also responsible for editing the Vox Romanica magazine in Basel. In 1982 he submitted his habilitation thesis Locuzioni e fatti sociali to the University of Basel . Riverberi di fatti della storia del diritto sulla lingua ( published as a book in 2002 under the title Per modo di dire… Storia della lingua e anthropologia nelle locuzioni italiane ed europee ). In 1985 he became a private lecturer , in 1988 associate professor and in 1991 professor for Italian linguistics at the University of Basel. In 2003 he retired .

Lurati looks back on an intensive and fruitful scientific activity, from synchronous and diachronic lexicology and etymology to onomasiology , to onomastics and toponomastics , to phraseology and to the study of neologisms . In the connection of written documentation with research in the field of Swiss folklore, he proves to be "a sensitive and modern interpreter of research into illustrious Swiss tradition".

He gave guest lectures at the universities of Naples , Pisa , Paris and Rome . With his research he “helped to shed light on the special situation of a dynamic area between Lombardy and Ticino” and “has given linguistic research and research into the history of Italian language on a European level”.

Private

Lurati is married to the primary school teacher Maria Luisa Tarchini (* 1935) and has two daughters, Chiara (* 1971) and Giovanna (* 1976). He lives in Montagnola .

In 2010 he called on the director of the Locarno Film Festival , Marco Solari , and its artistic director Olivier Père to resign because three films with pornographic content had been shown at the festival. He also criticized the festival in 2015 because Aida Schläpfer's documentary Noun about persecuted Christians in Iraq was rejected.
