Otto Kähler (Major General)

Otto August Johannes Kähler (born June 16, 1830 in Neuhausen ; † November 8, 1885 in Constantinople ) was a Prussian major general and Ottoman lieutenant general . As part of a military mission to reorganize the Ottoman Army , he later served as adjutant general to Sultan Abdul Hamid II .

Life

He was the son of pastor Siegfried August Kähler (1800–1895) and his wife Minna, née Fey († 1857).

Military career

On November 1, 1848, Kähler began his military career as a one-year volunteer with the 1st Pioneer Division of the Prussian Army in Königsberg . He later switched to cavalry and was promoted to second lieutenant on April 13, 1852 in the service of the 1st Dragoon Regiment in Tilsit . Between 1856 and 1859 he attended the General War School . So he became a regimental adjutant and from 1861 worked in the topographic office of the Great General Staff in Berlin . At the end of 1864 he occupied a post as adjutant of the 12th Division in Neisse . In 1866 he was used in the Austro-Prussian War as Rittmeister in Bohemia . After the end of the war he became squadron chief in the 2nd Silesian Dragoon Regiment in Oels .

In the Franco-Prussian War he served as General Staff Officer of the 2nd Cavalry Division under Lieutenant General Wilhelm zu Stolberg-Wernigerode . In this position he took part in the battles at Beaumont , Sedan , Coulmiers , Orléans and Le Mans and the siege of Paris . Awarded the Iron Cross in both classes for his behavior , Kähler returned to the General Staff after the peace treaty at the end of May 1871. From October 1, 1872 to June 12, 1876 he worked as a teacher at the War Academy and was then commander of the 2nd Silesian Hussar Regiment No. 6 . After many years in Berlin, he lived in Neustadt from now on . By the middle of September 1881, Kähler became colonel . On April 29, 1882, he was granted a three-month vacation in order to transfer to Ottoman service. Therefore, Kahler was transferred on June 13 with his previous uniforms to the officers of the army and on 29 June 1882 the character as a Major General to the disposition provided.

Kähler entered the service of Sultan Abdul Hamid II as a military adviser with three other Prussian officers . He was used in Constantinople to reorganize and modernize the Ottoman army. However, his reform proposals could not be implemented due to internal resistance, corruption and linguistic communication problems.

Kähler died on November 8, 1885 after a brief illness in Constantinople.

family

Kähler married Klara Johanna Elisabeth Bornträger (1831–1914) on March 26, 1860 in Insterburg. The children Fritz (* 1861), Minna (1863–1876), Amalie (* 1864) and Gotthelf August Wilhelm († 1870) emerged from the marriage.
