Otto Knappe von Knappstädt
Otto August Knappe von Knappstädt (born April 22, 1815 in Oels , † February 16, 1906 in Neubrandenburg ) was a Prussian infantry general .
Life
origin
Otto was the son of the later Prussian Major General August Knappe von Knappstädt (1775-1852) and his wife Charlotte Dorothea, born von Mützschefall (1776-1851).
Military career
After attending schools in Prenzlau and Neubrandenburg squire appeared as musketeer in the Regiment Infantry 40th the Prussian army one. He became second lieutenant in 1834 and served in the training infantry battalion from 1837. In 1838 he became a battalion adjutant and in 1850 prime lieutenant . In the same year he was transferred as adjutant at the commandant's office in Luxembourg . He was promoted to captain in 1852, to major in 1859 and to lieutenant colonel in 1864. When the German War broke out in 1866, he was colonel and commander of Kaiser Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 . He was only used here in the final phase of the Battle of Königgrätz and his unit suffered very few losses.
At the beginning of the war against France , Knappe was entrusted with the leadership of the 3rd Guard Infantry Brigade for the duration of the mobile relationship . With this large formation he took part in the battle of Gravelotte , where his brigade suffered extremely heavy losses and miners themselves were wounded. He did not return to active service until December 1870 to take part in the siege of Paris . For his achievements he received both classes of the Iron Cross .
On the occasion of the imperial proclamation in Versailles , Knappe was promoted to major general on January 18, 1871 and appointed brigade commander on June 17, 1871. At the same time, from the end of August, he was also active as a member of the commission advising on the draft military penal code for the German Reich. On May 18, 1876 Knappe was transferred to the officers à la suite of the army with the rank and fees of a division commander and was sent to Württemberg to take over command of the 27th Division (2nd Royal Württembergische) . On May 27, 1876 he was appointed commander of this division and three days later he was promoted to lieutenant general . On December 9, 1878, he was released from his command and, with the award of the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves, put up for disposition with the statutory pension . On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Gravelotte, Knappe was given the character of General of the Infantry by Kaiser Wilhelm II on August 18, 1895 .
Knappe was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
