August Knappe from Knappstädt

August Christoph Knappe , from 1798 Knappe von Knappstädt , (born February 6, 1775 in Glogau , † June 29, 1852 in Prenzlau ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Origin and family

August was a son of the Prussian court and criminal councilor in Glogau Georg Christoph Knappe and Johanne Charlotte Schneider († 1808). His mother married Karl Ludwig von Cocceji (1724–1808) as a widow in 1789 with the Prussian Higher Government President in Glogau . As a result, August and his four siblings were raised to the Prussian nobility in 1798 with the addition of a coat of arms based on the stepfather's and the name Knappe von Knappstädt .

In 1804 he married Charlotte Dorothea, née von Mützschefall (1776-1851). The marriage resulted in nine children, including the two Prussian generals Julius Knappe von Knappstädt (1809–1872) and Otto Knappe von Knappstädt (1815–1906).

Career

August began his career in the Prussian army in 1791 as a corporal corporal in Fusilier - battalion " of Prosch (no. 9)." Towards the end of 1792 he advanced to Portepeefähnrich and took part in the First Coalition War , in particular the siege of Verdun , the cannonade of Valmy and the battles near Hochheim, Alsheim, Limbach, Tann, Steinbach, Busenberg, Neustadt, Türkheim, Obernheim, Deidesberg and Hochspeyer part. With the 5th Reserve Battalion of the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment he was re-employed as a staff captain in 1813 . Half a year later, in 1813, he was again the real captain and company commander in the 12th Reserve Infantry Regiment . During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battles at Goldberg, Eisenach, Cosselies, Sévres and Illy as well as in the battles of the Katzbach , Leipzig , Ligny and finally at Belle Alliance . For his work with Goldberg he received the Iron Cross II. Class, for Leipzig the Cross I. Class.

In 1816 he was promoted to major and commander of the Fusilier Battalion in the 24th Infantry Regiment. In 1825 he was awarded the Service Cross , in 1832 the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class, and in the same year rose to lieutenant colonel . The following year he was given the command of the 40th Infantry Regiment . With his promotion to colonel in 1834, he received the appointment of regimental commander . The Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a ribbon was awarded to him in 1836 and in 1838 he received his departure with the character of major general and an annual pension of 1750 thalers .
