Otto von Bernuth

Otto Friedrich Karl von Bernuth (born December 2, 1816 in Berlin-Friedrichswerder , † October 20, 1887 in Bonn ) was a Prussian civil servant. Among other things, he was police chief in Berlin and district president in Cologne . He was also a conservative member of the Prussian House of Representatives .

Life

He came from the noble family von Bernuth and was the son of Julius August von Bernuth (1782-1857), Real Secret Higher Government Councilor in the Ministry of the Interior and member of the Prussian State Council , and the Theodora Philippine Jochmus.

Career

He was baptized on January 30, 1817 in Berlin-Friedrichswerder. After studying law in Bonn and Berlin, Bernuth entered the Prussian civil service in 1839 as a government referendar . Since 1835 he was a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . In 1843 he became a government assessor in Danzig and in 1846 he moved to Koblenz .

In 1848 Bernuth was appointed provisional district administrator in the Liegnitz district. The official appointment followed two years later. From 1862 Bernuth served as police chief of Berlin. In 1867 he was appointed district president in Cologne. After his role as police chief in Berlin in connection with the assassination attempt on Otto von Bismarck in 1866 had been publicly discussed in 1884 , Bernuth was decommissioned. He was subsequently rehabilitated by being awarded the star for the Order of the Crown, 2nd class.

Bernuth was also politically active. From 1849 to 1852 and from 1859 to 1861 he was a member of the right-wing parliamentary group of Count Karl von Pückler-Burghauß in the Prussian House of Representatives.

family

He was married to Johanna Emilie, née von Graß. From the marriage u. a. the later Prussian major general Clemens von Bernuth (1848–1922) emerged.
