Bernhard Heinrich Otto Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim (born April 3, 1854 in Coburg , † November 26, 1915 in Halle (Saale) ) was a Prussian lieutenant general in the First World War .

Otto was the second son of Heinrich Rudolf Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim († June 10, 1889 in Halle an der Saale) and his wife Thekla Sophie Eleonore Franziska, born Freiin von und zu der Tann-Rathsamhausen († January 17, 1868 ). His father was a Prussian lieutenant colonel and district commander z. D.

Military career

Stein graduated from high school and joined the 2nd Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 32 of the Prussian Army on October 2, 1872 as a flag junior . There he was promoted to second lieutenant in mid-October 1874 and to prime lieutenant in mid-January 1884 . Placed à la suite of the regiment on December 18, 1886 , Stein subsequently acted as adjutant of the 12th Infantry Brigade. With his promotion to captain on May 22, 1889, he was transferred to the infantry regiment "Graf Bose" (1st Thuringian) No. 31 , where he worked as a company commander until March 23, 1890. Stein then served in the same function for four years in the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot and was then adjutant at the General Command of the Guard Corps . As a major transferred to the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 on May 30, 1896 , Stein served from March 22, 1897 to June 3, 1900 as the personal adjutant of Albrecht von Prussia , regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig . After this command he returned as a battalion commander in the Kaiser Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1, was on September 12, 1902, Lieutenant Colonel and as such was used on foot with the staff of the 2nd Guard Regiment. From June 16, 1905, he initially acted as leader of this regiment and was finally appointed commander on September 15 of the same year with the promotion to colonel . The regiment gave up Stein on January 26, 1910, became major general and commander of the 4th Guard Infantry Brigade . However , he only commanded this large formation until October 12, 1910 and was instead given command of the 2nd Guard Infantry Brigade . On April 21, 1911, Stein was finally made available with a pension .

After his departure he lived on his estate in Völkershausen.

When the First World War broke out, Stein was reused as a ZD officer and appointed commander of the 15th Infantry Brigade in Halle. In this position he was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and died of a stroke in the course of his service .

Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim was a knight of honor of the Order of St. John .
