Pétange ( Luxembourgish Péiteng , French Pétange ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to Canton Esch-sur-Alzette . It is one of the smallest municipalities in Luxembourg in terms of area with just under twelve square kilometers, but the fifth largest in terms of population. The proportion of foreigners in 2010 was 44.7 percent. The city charter was the main town (chef-lieu d'une commune) not yet awarded.

Pétange is shaped by the steel industry. As a new economic pillar, companies in the manufacturing industry have been added within the framework of the European Development Pole PED (since 1985). In addition to traces of the industrial past, many parts of the community have retained their rural character.

Pétange is located on the Chiers in the southwest of Luxembourg and borders Belgium in the west.

Due to the increased number of residents, the municipal council has consisted of seventeen members since 2011.

In Petingen, a CSV - LSAP coalition currently governs , which with a total of twelve seats won the majority in the 2017 local council elections; the opposition consists of two Greens , two representatives of the Lëtzebuerg pirate party and one representative each of the DP . Déi Lénk , déi Conservative and ADR missed their entry into the newly elected municipal council.

history

Pétange is first mentioned in a charter from 938 under the name Perdgitten . Professor Jos. According to Meyers, the name Pétange comes from the name of the Franconian clan Petto .

In 1601 the border between Lorraine and Luxembourg was established. Pétange went to Luxembourg and Rodingen to Lorraine. Since 1795 the community has existed in its present form and consists of the villages of Lamadelaine, Petingen and Rodingen.

Pétange experienced the greatest increase in population at the end of the 19th century when the Minette was mined on the heights around Pétange , the ironworks in Rodingen was built and the village was connected to the railway.

On September 9, 1944, Pétange was the first municipality in Luxembourg to be liberated by the US Army. A memorial was erected in honor of Hyman S. Josefson, the first American soldier to fall on Luxembourg soil.

On August 9, 2019, a tornado covered numerous roofs in the village and in neighboring Niederkerschen . There were injuries.

Pétange was an important railway junction in the past and is connected to the CFL rail network with a train station and the additional Lamadelaine and Rodingen stops .

Archaeologists have excavated an oppidum and a temple complex of the Treveri on the Titelberg .

The Fond-de-Gras industrial and railway park is popular for excursions and as an event scene. The “ Train 1900 ” museum railway connects Fond-de-Gras with Pétange via part of the Pétange – Bois Châtier line . The terminus of the “Train 1900” in Pétange is opposite the CFL station building.

The Giele Botter nature reserve encompasses the area of ​​a former open-cast mine; it is made accessible by nature trails, which also offer a unique view of the Korn valley . In the south of Pétange, the Prënzebierg forest reserve offers opportunities for local recreation. In Rodingen there is the Kordal swimming pool (PiKo) with a retractable roof and an 80-meter-long slide.

Pétange has twinned cities with Maribor in Slovenia and Schio in Italy.
