Patti Cake $ - Queen of Rap (original title Patti Cake $ ) is an American music film by Geremy Jasper , which premiered on January 23, 2017 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film was released in German cinemas on November 2, 2017.

Patricia Dombrowski is not only called Patti Cake $ or Killa P, but is often teased as "Dumbo" because of her last name and body size. But this makes the youngster from North Jersey ricochet off. Her Nana, a middle-aged woman, sits in her armchair smoking all day and watches TV. Patti has to earn money as a waitress to finance her sick grandma's medical bills. Her mother had failed as a musician herself, but Patti not only has a big mouth, but also a solid goal and wants to achieve fame as a gangster rapper. She is supported by her buddy and rap partner Hareesh / Jheri, who is also her biggest fan. Then she meets Basterd, who actually likes Gothic Metal, but might be able to make Patti's dreams come true, because the up-and-coming rapper is looking for a producer who can give her access to the hip-hop scene.

The title-giving lead role of Patti was cast by Sydney- born Australian actress Danielle Macdonald , who after the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival was compared to actresses such as Jennifer Lawrence and Gabourey Sidibe in roles who had made them break through. Although Macdonald is Australian, she speaks New Jersey English in the film. For Siddharth Dhananjay , who plays Patti's best friend and greatest admirer in the film, this was his first role in a feature film. Cathy Moriarty plays Patti's grandmother in the film, and Mamoudou Athie played Basterd.

Film music and vocals

Jasper, who had started his career as a musician, put together the songs for the film in preproduction, which were suggested to him by various members of the film team and sung by MacDonald. Jasper composed and produced many of the film songs with Jason Binnick .

Leading actress Danielle Macdonald, who not only had to study American slang for the film, but also had no experience with rapping, regularly worked in the studio with her coach, the New York rapper and ghostwriter Skylar Skyzoo Taylor, on a genre- typical interpretation and hers Body language. Jasper sent Macdonald new hip-hop songs every week for two and a half years to rehearse them.
