Paul Di'Anno
Paul Di'Anno , actually Paul Andrews , (* 17th May 1958 in Chingford ) is a British heavy metal - singer . He was the singer of the band Iron Maiden from 1977 to 1981 . He was replaced by Bruce Dickinson in late 1981 for abusing alcohol and other drugs . His solo career brought him little success.
biography
Paul Di'Anno grew up as the son of an Italian migrant family in Chingford as one of eight siblings. After his father's death, the family moved to the East End of London, where his mother remarried. Di'Anno began to be interested in music, especially rock and punk, at a very early age and sang in numerous local punk bands. In 1978 he was playing with his pub rock band Rock Candy in London when Steve Harris discovered him and brought him to Iron Maiden. He can be heard on all previous Maiden releases up to the album Killers . In the songwriting he only took part in the songs Running Free , Remember Tomorrow , Killers and Sanctuary , as most of the songs were already before his entry. After a concert tour lasting 113 dates, voice problems arose for the first time, which is why the Germany performances had to be canceled. Iron Maiden separated from Di'Anno also because of his often problematic drug use and extreme mood swings. Nevertheless, he appeared again for a few newly shot scenes in the video retrospective 12 Wasted Years from 1987 to review his time in the band.
Through his work at Maiden he had made a name for himself and initially founded Lone Wolf, which came into conflict with a group of the same name. He then simply renamed the group DiAnno, but was only able to release his debut album in 1984. The AOR album flopped. In 1985 the group disbanded. In 1983 he participated in the Japanese all-star project Honjoh Misako . On their debut album, however, Di'Anno can only be heard as a background singer.
He then hired as a singer at Gogmagog, where, in addition to Clive Burr , the later Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers also played. Later "he strictly rejects any question about [the band] with the words" No Comment "". The group was the prelude to a number of not very successful projects. Gogmagog was supposed to be an all-star project between a theater and a rock band. The preparations swallowed up millions of dollars, but apart from one single (now a coveted collector's item) nothing ever came about.
Afterwards Di'Anno founded his own group Battlezone, which achieved some respectable successes in America and appeared at the Dynamo Open Air 1986. The group existed from 1986 to 1987. After that, Di'Anno retired into private life. In 1990 he got an offer from Praying Mantis for a Japan tour, which was also documented on the album Live at Last . Ex-Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton was also involved . In 1991 he took part in the project All Stars of Lea Hart (former Fastway ) that some NWoBHM united musician.
In 1992 he started his own band Killers , whose debut CD Murder One was well received by the specialist press, but whose sales figures did not meet expectations. In 1994, the second album Menace to Society was released , which was dismissed as a Pantera copy. The group broke up in 1995 after a tour with Metal Church .
Paul Di'Anno also had a rock-oriented project called The Original Iron Men with former Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton , in which both shared the vocals. In this constellation, two albums were released from 1995 to 1996.
In the years that followed, Di'Anno tried to profit from his vocal post with Iron Maiden and participated in numerous compilations , tribute albums and short-term all-star projects. In 1998 he briefly reanimated Battlezone for an album, after which there were always isolated reunions with his earlier bands.
After 12 wasted years , Paul Di'Anno also took part in the DVD The History of Iron Maiden , which was released in 2004 and documents the history of the band through several interviews with all current and former members up to 1983.
Di'Anno is married and has children. According to his own statements, he quit drug use for his family. In 2011 he was imprisoned for 9 months for stealing £ 45,000 with a fake back condition. In 2013 he went on a farewell tour to end his career because of persistent knee problems. However, he soon revised the farewell.
In 2014 he founded the band Architects of Chaoz with his live backing band The Phantomz, who released their debut album The League of Shadows in May 2015 , which was nominated for Best Debut Act 2015 by Metal Hammer . This was the first time in 15 years that he could be heard on an album with exclusively new material. Previously, the record label demo Rejected in Mayhem became the demo of the month in Rock Hard magazine.
