Paula Badosa Gibert (born November 15, 1997 in Manhattan , New York , United States ) is a Spanish tennis player .

Career

Badosa Gibert started playing tennis at the age of seven, her preferred surface is the hard court. She mainly plays on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and has won seven individual titles there.

The Spaniard was one of the best in her age group among the juniors and won the 2015 French Open junior competition in the final against Anna Kalinskaja without having given a set in the course of the tournament. At that time she could already look back on several years of experience as a professional player on the ITF tour.

On the WTA Tour 2015 she went to the Miami Open in Key Biscane with a wildcard ; in the third round she was defeated there by the later quarter-finalist Karolína Plíšková in two sets. She then received a wildcard for qualification for the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid , where she immediately reached the peloton, but had to give up in round one against Sara Errani when the score was 3-0 due to injury. In June of that year, she won her first title at an ITF $ 25,000 tournament in Denain . In her first Grand Slam appearance in the women at the US Open , she was eliminated in the second round of qualification.

After that, Badosa's performance, who had difficulties with the transition from the ITF to the WTA tour, stagnated for a long period of time. In Miami , Madrid and Mallorca , where she came into the main draw with a wildcard in 2016, she lost in the first round. In addition, the number of tasks increased due to injuries. It wasn't until 2017 that she gradually fought her way back up the tennis world rankings with victories at smaller ITF tournaments . In 2018, as a qualifier in Rabat , she managed to win again in the main draw of a WTA tournament after more than three years. Her first quarter-final game on the WTA tour against Aleksandra Krunić she had to end early after losing the first set due to physical problems. In November, after winning five sets of three at the ITF $ 60,000 tournament in Valencia, she won her biggest title to date.

At the Australian Open 2019 Badosa qualified for the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, but failed in straight sets against the Australian wildcard player Kimberly Birrell . Also in Wimbledon and at the US Open , but there as a lucky loser, she made the jump into the main field, but failed in the first round. Her best result on the WTA Tour was reaching the semi-finals in Palermo , where she lost to Kiki Bertens . In addition, the Spaniard continued to be successful on the ITF tour. However, she managed to win only one title there in five finals. Nevertheless, she was able to finish the WTA season in the top 100 in the world for the first time and thus qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open 2020 . There she moved to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career after a clear success against Johanna Larsson , in which she was beaten by Petra Kvitová .
