Peter Krattiger , also Pek Krattiger (born March 4, 1957 in Waldenburg BL ) is a Swiss guitarist , composer , producer , arranger , graphic artist and painter . From 1975 to 1992 he was the guitarist of the rock group Irrwisch .

In 1986 with Dave Denham founded Double-6 recording studio mainly rock was produced. Then began in 1993 with the merger with BBM Studios, an era of television productions with a focus on concert recording. Pek was responsible for the sound mix for concert recordings of rock groups such as Patent Ochsner , Züri West , Sina (singer) , Natacha , The Hooters , Manfred Mann's Earth Band , Billy Cobham , Fish (singer) , Paolo Mendonça, Polo Hofer , Robben Ford , Gotthard , Jovanotti , Candy Dulfer , Zucchero , Nits , Kingdom Come etc. responsible.

Since 1999, Pek has also been exhibiting his work as a visual artist. His oeuvre is determined by pencil, charcoal and ink drawings, oil paintings and, since 2004, increasingly by mixed techniques with sand and mortar.

Life

The 1970s

In the mid-seventies, the guitarist Peter Krattiger (Pek) met the organist Steff Bürgi at the Basel School of Applied Arts . They quickly realized that they were musical soulmates, and at the age of 17, Pek soon became a member of Irrwisch , which was already domiciled in Kestenholz.

At the end of the decade, Irrwisch went into the studio for the first time (Powerplay, then Horgen ZH ) to record the vinyl single Metronom (A) and Reflections (B) (sound engineer: Jim Duncombe, known from Jimmy and the Rackets , the heaters when the chairs were on fire canceled Rolling Stones concert on the Berlin Waldbühne in 1965).

The band's victory at the final of the national jazz and rock festival in the amphitheater in Augst coincided with the same time. The appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival meant playing in front of an international audience for the first time. The live recording of it appeared on Swiss television's Jugend-TV program and was another first for the band at this rather exciting time. This was followed by the signing of a record deal with EMI Switzerland for two albums.

The 1980s

In 1981 von Irrwisch released the first album "In Search of" (Vinyl, MusiCassette ) with Pek and Christian Bürgi as guitarists, Steff Bürgi as lead singer and keyboarder, Erich Riesen as bassist and Josef Kissling as drummer. Armand Volker , Munich, ( Spider Murphy Gang , Münchener Freiheit ) for EMI. TV appearances on ARD and Swiss television were the result.

A year later followed the production of the second album with the same line-up and the same producer, "Living In A Fool's Paradise", which reached the first chart position (on Südwestfunk Baden-Baden).

A tour of Germany as the opening act for Roger Chapman was a highlight of the time. Peter Krattiger and his colleagues were particularly pleased with the work prize of the Canton of Solothurn for the album Living in a Fool's Paradise, as rock has not been considered the preferred art form of the cantonal cultural promotion until now.

Appearances in the programs "Ohne Filter" on SWF3 , "Hear we go" on Swiss television and "Pop Stop" on BR ( Bavarian TV ) also helped the group to gain greater popularity.

Later, Irrwisch messed up the signed record deal for 3 albums with EMI Electrola Cologne in the course of "transfer negotiations " with Clive Corcoran, the manager of Saga , without reaching an agreement with him.

In the mid-eighties, Irrwisch came back with "No More Than I Can Say" (vinyl). The single and maxi-single was produced by Phil Carmen .

During this time Peter Krattiger and David Denham founded the Double-6-Studios. As a new start at EMI Switzerland, Irrwisch released the album “Countdown” (CD, vinyl, MusiCassette), which was produced by Cyrill Schläpfer (Ur-Musig) in Lucerne. The larger concerts included appearing in the Hallenstadion in Zurich and in the Palais de Beaulieu Lausanne as the opening act for Marillion. With “Countdown” Irrwisch reached number ten in the Swiss radio hit parade. The song "Queen of Fire" was recorded as a pre-single for the next album in the studios of Dieter Dierks ( Scorpions etc.) in Stommeln.

In 1989, Pek went to Wohlen with his musician friends to record the album "The Fish Came to the Surface" (CD, vinyl, MusiCassette) with producer Bernie Staub, of which there are three singles.

The video for “Queen of Fire” was produced in Bremen with producer “Mike” Michael Leckebusch ( Beat Club ). In the same year the extensive Swiss “Camel Tour” took place with Irrwisch as headliner .

The 1990s

In 1990 Irrwisch released a live album that Giovanni Dolci recorded during the "Camel Tour" in the Hotel National in Bern directly from FoH (Front of House = sound mix for the audience) directly to stereo (without multi-track process for any post-production) has been. That year there was another appearance in the Hallenstadion, this time within a festival.

The next Irrwisch album "Forbidden Fruits" was produced by Curt Cress in the Munich Pilot Studios.

A larger concert with Irrwisch as the main group took place in the same year in the St. Jakobshalle near Basel. Krattiger left Irrwisch after completing the Forbidden Fruits Tour.

In 1993 Peks Double-6-Studios merged with BBM-Videoproductionz and from then on presented itself as BBM-Studios. Krattiger was responsible for the live sound mixes in the mobile recording studio for the program Music Special, which was broadcast by all regional television stations in Switzerland. Von Irrwisch with Peter Krattiger as guitarist also released the album “Greatest Hits” (CD, vinyl) as the best of songs recorded so far.

Krattiger founded the Musictown recording studio in Niederdorf BL in 1999 . The cooperation followed u. a. with the musical star Florian Schneider , the singer Gigi Moto , with Stefan Wagner ( Lovebugs ) and Fredy Schär . That year, Krattiger's first picture exhibition, “Pekamorphosen”, took place in the old factory in Sissach. The book of the same name with fold-out series of transformations, mainly pencil drawings, was published at the same time.

From 2000

Pek started recording for his newly founded band Pekamor with the singer Gina Günthard ( Mad Dodo ) and Florian Schneider ( Phantom of the Opera , Jesus Christ Superstar , Rocky Horror Picture Show ). Instead of forming the standard line-up of a rock band with an electric bassist, Krattiger was able to win over the tuba player Claude Plattner for the low notes.

In the Baselbieter Heimatbuch, Volume 23, "Klang", a report appeared on Krattiger's musical work to date. In contrast, the article that was published in the "Heimatkunde Waldenburg" about Pek focuses more on his work as a visual artist.

The pictures from Krattiger's exhibition “Gemalte Musik” from 2001, which were exhibited in Basel and Bern, were mainly painted using classical techniques. In contrast, Pek discovered sand for his pictures for the 2004 exhibition “ Tango ”, whereby the natural colors, which can vary depending on the origin of this material, determine the color. The pictures were exhibited in Kestenholz in the Caesar Spiegel House and at the Tango Weeks in Zurich.

Two years later, Pek released Pekamor's only album, "LOS" (line-up: Pek, Caro Kyas, Rolf Jörin, Claude Plattner, Andreas Jörin, as duet partner Florian Schneider).

Pek took part in international short film competitions with the music trash video animation "The Little Visitor".

In 2009, Pek showed pictures under the theme “Poetry meets weird humor” in Niederdorf BL. In addition to sand and classic painting and drawing techniques, pigmented mortar and chalk were used as materials.

The Oltner Tagblatt, the Mittellandzeitung (az-Medien) and the NZZ also commissioned Peter Krattiger to produce court drawings.

Pek produced a DVD of the set art exhibition “Rythme du temps” in the project space M54, Basel, with the sculptors Denis Perregaux-Dielf, Karin Detray, Ruth Etter, Sandro Zimmermann, Urs Ernst and the musicians Julien Annoni, Olivier Membrez, Fabien Sevilla .

In 2013 Krattiger founded "The Waldenburg", an open regional composers collective to produce an album trilogy. The Waldenburg's first CD , "1" , was released a year later.

In 2017 Krattiger formed a rock group to perform the Concerto for Group and Orchestra written by Jon Lord in the new auditorium of Hoffmann-La Roche in Kaiseraugst with the Kaiseraugst Music Society, which was expanded by a few symphonists . The two concerts took place in front of a sold out house. The collective was bid farewell both times with a standing ovation. The rock group consists of Krattiger, guitar, Patric Diriwächter, Hammond B3, Henry Jörin, bass, and Christian Rütschlin, drums.

Since 2019, caricatures by Krattiger have been published regularly in the Volksstimme (Sissach) . Krattiger participates in a crossover project with the Ukrainian youth choir Perlen von Odessa as the guitarist of the ad hoc country formation Granitzler with Andy Schaub, double bass, and Simon Dettwiler, Schwyzerörgeli . The Waldenburg album "2" will be released almost simultaneously in autumn 2019 .
