Map Wels Pernau

Pernau (in Wels colloquially the Pernau) is a census district, a district and a cadastral municipality in the east of the city of Wels . Until its incorporation in 1938, the district was a separate municipality, today 9,561 inhabitants live in Wels-Pernau. The Pernau lies between the Traun and the western railway line and is heavily industrialized.

Districts and settlements

Today, Pernau is divided into the districts and settlements: Dickerldorf, Haidl, Hochpoint, industrial area, Maxlhaid, Pernau, sheep meadows, shooting range and Untereisenfeld.

In the north the Pernau borders on the districts of Puchberg and Neustadt , in the west on the inner city and in the south on Thalheim and across the Traun on the community of Schleissheim . The districts of Oberhart, Stadelhof and the airfield are also counted as part of the cadastral community of Pernau, but these areas are now counted as part of the counting district of Puchberg or Neustadt.

The area of the cadastral community of Pernau is 12.71 km², the census district 7.81 km².

history

Pernau was first mentioned in a document in 1414, and the “Bernau auf der Haide” castle was built in the area around the Pernauhof (at that time owned by the Lambach Abbey ). The castle changed hands several times in the course of history. In 1902 it was acquired by Arthur von Ziegler, who was the last mayor of Pernau from 1910 to 1938. During his tenure, among other things, the Pernau School was built in 1912.

While the eastern part of the Pernau was characterized by agriculture for a very long time, an industrial area developed very early in the west, which bordered directly on Wels. The connection to the artificially created Welser Mühlbach was important .

The Wels paper mill (later Wels paper mill ) was opened in 1515, making it the oldest industrial company in Wels and the oldest paper mill north of the Alps until its closure in 1978. Today there is a transport company on the site of the old paper mill.

The establishment of a military training area, the so-called “shooting range” on the Traun in 1916, is also of historical importance for the Pernau. From 1919 to 1961 a cable ferry ran from the shooting range to Schleissheim across the Traun.

At the end of the 1930s, the Wels marshalling yard was built in the north of the district, and it is still one of the largest freight yards in Austria. During the Second World War, the Pernau was repeatedly the target of Allied bombing attacks, especially the marshalling yard and the neighboring settlements were badly destroyed.

During the Nazi era there were several military installations in Pernau: apart from an army equipment store on the site of the paper factory, there was an army equipment office, a construction store for the army construction office in Wiesenstrasse (this was later used as a “meadow store” for forced laborers) and in the area of Boschstrasse / Kalkofenstraße a camp for Russian prisoners of war (later "Kalkofenlager") for the construction of the Army Equipment Office. After the war, numerous refugees and expellees from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, especially Danube Swabians , Sudeten Germans and Transylvanian Saxons, settled in the then sparsely populated district of Pernau, so a separate refugee class was set up in the local school as early as 1947.

From the end of the 1940s, Pernau developed more and more into an industrial location, with numerous well-known companies such as the stamp manufacturer Trodat or Rumpl AG settling here. In the 1950s, as in all Wels districts, the construction of settlements was pushed forward. In 1954, for example, the shooting range settlement was completed as a "barracks settlement".

In 1964 the construction of the St. Josef Church began, so Pernau was the last district to have its own church until the beginning of the new millennium.

Economy and Infrastructure

Pernau is the location of numerous international companies, most of them are located in the industrial area around Boschstrasse on the Traun . The largest companies here include TGW , Kellner and Kunz, the two transport companies Felbermayr and Engelmayer, the powder coating manufacturer Tiger Coatings , the kitchen manufacturer EWE and the VOEST subsidiary VAM. In the northern part of Pernau, along Linzer Straße, the baked goods manufacturer Resch & Frisch - a traditional Pernau company - and the world's largest stamp manufacturer Trodat have their headquarters.

The waste incineration plant in the east of the district, which is operated by the waste recycling company AVE, is also important. The waste heat from the incinerated waste is fed into the Wels district heating network. The plant is one of the most modern in Europe.

The district is connected to the West Autobahn by the B137 or the B138 Welser Osttangente , there is a direct Aubobahn connection to the A25 at the Wels-Ost exit.

Linzer Strasse and Hans-Sachs-Strasse are part of Bundesstrasse 1 . The district is connected to the city center and the rest of the city via bus lines 2 and 3 of the Wels line.

In the west of Pernau on the border with the city center was the Wels psychiatry, which was incorporated into the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic in 2014. The building is now used as a home for asylum seekers .

There are also some vocational schools for technical and commercial professions in the west.

Leisure and culture

Pernau is the hometown of the Blaue Elf Wels football club, the sports field is located on Pernauer Strasse, right on the edge of the city center. The area on the Traun and the Schafwiesen district are primarily considered to be local recreation areas. The so-called "Schafwiesenfest" - a kind of district festival - has been taking place here since 2012. In the discussion about the construction of a swimming lake in Wels, the wetland on the border with the town of Marchtrenk is mentioned as a possibility . In a former gravel pit there is a groundwater lake which has not been accessible to the public for several years.
