The Petersbach is a thirteen kilometer long stream in Upper Lusatia and the largest source river of the Pließnitz .

course

The brook rises on the eastern slope of the Kottmar and flows from there in a north-easterly direction before it takes up the Friedensthalbach west of Herrnhut . After crossing the city, it flows around the Hengstberg and breaks through a Härtling there . Further to the southeast, near Niederruppersdorf Castle , it takes up the Ruppersdorfer Wasser and the Triebenbach . North of Euldorf come Eulstegbach and Erlich Bach added. From there it flows further north in meanders , where it first passes the Rennersdorf flood retention basin and finally joins the Berthelsdorfer Wasser to Pließnitz in Rennersdorf .

ecology

The brook is one of the waters of the district that is particularly worthy of protection , almost its entire course belongs to the FFH area Pließnitzgebiet and below Herrnhut to the landscape protection area Herrnhuter Bergland . Before the brook flows through the city, its bank is lined with broken willows - red alder - bird cherry trees, as well as pasture paddocks and field trees. Kestrel , long-eared owl , green woodpecker and field thrush are particularly native there. Gray wagtail and wren nest on its middle and lower reaches , its banks are covered with ash, maple, elm, oak and linden.

Below the confluence of the Erlichbach, the creek has formed the sinkhole , a bulging slope at the foot of the Red Mountain . This section between Euldorf and Rennersdorf is overgrown by a botanically very attractive alluvial forest. The only occurrence of meadow horsetail in the entire Upper Lusatia is found here . There are also wet meadows with bitter foam herb and marsh marigolds in places . Other species that can be found among the deciduous trees are common golden nettles , mountain golden nettles and columbine rue . Ostrich fern , Hain chickweed and hairy calf 's goiter thrive on the alluvial areas of the brook . In spring, the cowslips , wood anemones and spotted lungwort bloom here .

In the waters of Peter Bach is now home again crayfish after they could no longer be detected in the late 20th century. Also brown trout , grayling , brook lamprey and bullhead are found.

use

In earlier times, several mills were driven by the stream, such as the field or meadow mill mentioned in 1529 and the Eulmühle mentioned in 1587 .
