The parish church of Niederolang belongs to the Niederolang fraction of the South Tyrolean municipality of Olang . The Catholic Church under the patronage of St. Peter the Apostle and St. Agnes belongs to the dean's office of Bruneck in the diocese of Bozen-Brixen and is incorporated into the Neustift monastery . The church building is a listed building .

history

Olang is very likely one of the original parishes of South Tyrol, to which the surrounding communities Geiselsberg , Rasen-Antholz , Percha , Oberwielenbach and St. Veit / Prags belonged. A pastor was first documented in 1202, and the parish has belonged to the Neustift monastery since 1221. In 1304 a cooperator for the branch churches is attested. The church tower, as it is preserved today, was built by Jörg Maurer in 1464. The Gothic church, of which the western nave wall is still preserved, was redesigned in the baroque style between 1709 and 1712 .

Building description

On the outside of the church, in addition to the Gothic spire, a fresco in a niche on the western nave wall by Hans von Bruneck from around 1420 is interesting, which represents a rarer variant of the Annunciation with a pregnant Mary. Another, but baroque, exterior fresco is located on the south wall of the church facing the cemetery; it shows the Mother of God with the two church patrons Peter and Agnes , and a sundial is integrated into the picture . The church's rectangular and lunette windows are also located in this wall .

The interior consists of a three-bay nave, which is covered by a high barrel vault with stitch caps . A powerful triumphal arch leads into the retracted choir with a straight end. An entablature , grafted on both sides, extends along both rooms, which are divided by pilasters . A parapet organ from the Reinisch-Pirchner company from 1989 is located on the two-storey gallery . The ceiling paintings were created in 1922 by Johann Matthias Peskoller; they show the Trinity with the evangelists John and Matthew above the high altar , in the middle picture above the nave the martyrdom of St. Agnes and in the third picture the martyrdom of the apostle Peter.

The high altar with the side figures of Saints Joseph and Paul comes from Michael Rasner from Brixen (1712); the high altar picture was created by Matthias Gasser, it shows the church patron under the Innsbruck Mariahilf picture . The left side altar is dedicated to St. Joseph and shows his death. The painting is flanked by the figures of St. Augustine and his mother Monika . Most valuable, however, is the figure of Our Lady from the early 15th century that was erected here and used to stand in the crypt of the St. Michael's Chapel at the cemetery. The right side altar shows Pope Sylvester with the figures of the plague patrons Sebastian and Rochus carved by Rasner . Another figure of Sebastian by Rasner is located above the sacristy door . The Stations of the Cross are by Johann Matthias Peskoller from 1922.

The St. Michael cemetery chapel is also a listed building . The two-storey building dates back to the 15th century and was redesigned in the 18th century (you can read the year 1725 on the door). The chapel has a polygonal choir closure, is structured with pillars and, like the crypt, has a barrel vault.
