history

The church, which was consecrated to Germanus von Granfelden , was first mentioned in 1350 . The collation about the parish was owned by the Johanniterkommende in neighboring Hohenrain . In 1627 the then incumbent commander had a new choir altar built for 100 guilders . Although the roof was renewed in 1645, there were reports of damage in 1670 and 1697/98. Finally, the dilapidated church was demolished in 1742. The parish had a new church erected from 1740, with the building being under the direction of the brothers Arbogast and Hans Caspar Rey from Muri . The church consecration took place on July 4, 1742 .

A new high altar was built between 1784 and 1799 (renewed again in 1842 while retaining the altar paintings). In 1821 plasterers from the Bregenzerwald replaced the wooden coffered ceiling with a ceiling ; they also made new side altars. Ludwig Pfyffer created two new choir windows in 1874 based on designs by Joseph Balmer . In 1877 a church tower was built at the front of the choir . Joseph Balmer led the first major interior renovation in 1888, at the same time he painted new pictures for the ceiling and high altar. The next interior renovation in 1920 included, among other things, the renewal of the stucco and new choir and confessionals. In 1968 there was an exterior renovation in which the eyelashes of the choir tower were changed. In 1981/82 the interior of the church was renovated again and received a new organ.

A gable roof summarizes the three-bay , indented with segmental arch windows nave and the three other adjoining retracted choir together. The main entrance is vaulted by a porch with Tuscan columns. The sacristy is located in an extension on the Gospel side . In contrast to the choir, the nave is vaulted.

The church tower rises behind the choir, the shaft of which bears the drawn-in bell chamber with round-arched sound holes , crowned by a pointed helmet between four curved eyelashes. There are five bells in the tower that were cast by the H. Rüetschi bell foundry in Aarau , four in 1876 and one (c ″) in 1981. They have the chimes es ′ - g ′ - b ′ - c ″ - es ″.

Organ in St. Germanus

Most of the furnishings date from the 19th century and are in the classical style. The framed profiles oval ceiling fresco, painted by Joseph Balmer, makes the transfer of the Church Office at Petrus . The painted also by Balmer high altar depicts the patron Germanus as the Lady recommends Abtwiler church. Above the side passages are two 117 cm high, baroque wooden statues depicting Bernhard von Clairvaux and the apostle Andreas . They were created around 1670/80 and are attributed to the Zug sculptor Johann Baptist Wickart . The two designed side altars with altarpieces by Michael Föhn are placed at an angle in the rectangular hall.

The organ was installed in 1982 by the Graf organ building workshop in Sursee . It has twelve registers on two manuals and a pedal .
