The Pentecost flood was a century flood on Pentecost in 1999 in Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria , Vorarlberg and Tyrol .

Due to the coincidence of large amounts of precipitation caused by a north- westerly accumulation, with the melting of snow , massive floods occurred in 1999 in the Isar , Amper , Ammer , Wertach , Lech , Iller , Vils , Inn and Danube areas .

On May 22nd , the low “Quartus” hit a small flood that was already there due to the snowmelt and triggered the Whitsun flood in the area of the Ammersee and the Amper and Isar rivers with rainfall of up to 180 liters per square meter . However, areas in the Oberallgäu district were also affected by flooding of the Iller and the Bavarian river basins of the Lech, Vils, Wertach and Isar as well as the Danube. The runoff of the Isar could be significantly reduced by the Sylvenstein reservoir , and so the peak runoff in Bad Tölz did not reach the hundred-year flood peak . On the Iller in Sonthofen and Kempten , on the Ammer near Oberammergau and in Weilheim and on the Loisach near Garmisch , the centenary peak has been clearly exceeded. In Neu-Ulm , the water ran from the newly opened Atlantis leisure pool (later Wonnemar), since 2016 the Danube pool along Schützenstraße into the city center and was only stopped by a sandbag wall before Johannisstraße. Sonthofen was cut off from the outside world on May 22, 1999, when the apex was reached at 12:00 o'clock, as all access roads were flooded. In Augsburg the overflowing Wertach caused severe damage and the Lech reached a flow rate of over 1500 m³ / s. The Danube also reached a new high at Neustadt , which meant that the dam was initially flooded until it softened, could no longer withstand the water and thus finally broke. As a result, large parts of the city of Neustadt, which has 12,000 inhabitants, were flooded. The district town of Kelheim , located downstream from the broken dam section, was also affected by the flood.

The greatest amounts of precipitation fell in Bad Hindelang - Hinterstein and had an annual rate of more than 250 years.

In many places, during the Alpine floods in Bavaria on 23 and 24 August 2005, the levels reached at the Pentecost flood were exceeded.

High water marks in Bregenz

In Vorarlberg, some areas close to the river were flooded by the Rhine and the town of Hard and the inner city of Bregenz were flooded by Lake Constance . Hard then had no drinking water for a long time and the telephone connection in Bregenz was interrupted for a long time.

In Tyrol, the small town of Pflach , located in the Reutte valley basin, was flooded.

Trivia

The Switzerland was in May 1999, also from flooding affected. The damage amounted to around 570 million Swiss francs. The flood of the Bünz created a floodplain area of national importance .
