from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Jakob Sattler (≈ April 30, 1695 in Wenns , Tyrol ; † May 20, 1738 in Olomouc ) was an Austrian sculptor of the late Baroque who worked in Moravia .

Life

Philipp Sattler was the seventh child of the sculptor Klemens Sattler and Maria Köllin. After his father's death in 1701, the family disappears from the parish registers of ifs and moved apparently to Ried im Oberinntal , home of the mother, as Sattler occasion of his wedding in the marriage register the Mauritz Church is in Olomouc called from Ried to arise. It can also be assumed that he learned the carving trade from Andreas Kölle, a relative, in Ried.

There is no evidence of where Sattler worked as a journeyman during his years of travel. Probably a stay in Italy , as he was influenced by Italian art, and certainly a stay in Znojmo , since there he must have met Anna Maria, the daughter of councilor Ferdinand Beck, whom he married on February 17, 1721 in Olomouc . It is not known when he came to town. Saddler became a master on March 24, 1721 and a citizen of Olomouc on April 29, 1723. One day later he bought the house "Zur golden Rose" in Bernhardinergasse 8, today's Slovenská ul. It is documented that he was the predecessor of the Olomouc shooting society on New Year's Day.

Sattler had five children, of whom his daughter Maria Veronika was married to the painter Johann Christoph Handke . His son Josef Ignaz learned the art of painting from Handke. Sattler died at the age of 43, probably from the consequences of a lung disease typical for stone sculptors, and was buried on May 22, 1738 under the ringing of all bells in the St. Mauritz cemetery , which testifies to his reputation during his lifetime.
