The Speyer location, Kurpfalzkaserne and other properties

Reffenthal water exercise area, formerly the Riberpray district
Reffenthal water area of the Special Pioneer Battalion 464, formerly the Riberpray district, view of the Angelhofer Altrhein .

The special pioneer battalion 464 was stationed in the 23.22 hectare Kurpfalz barracks in the very north of the Speyer-Nord district of the city of Speyer am Rhein.

Since then, in December 1962 and January 1963, the parachute pioneer company 260 from Mannheim and the airborne artillery battalion 265 from Großengstingen moved into a newly built barracks north of the settlement. In order to create living space for the soldiers' families, GEWO built apartment blocks west of Spaldinger Straße in the forest area.

Immediately to the south of the Bundeswehr branch in the Rhine valley between Binsfeld and Angelhofer Altrhein, with the opportunity to practice in the Angelhofer Altrhein, there has long been a location for French bridge pioneers, the Riberpray quarter , which was later shared by the Bundeswehr. The Reffenthal water exercise area took up an area of 66.5 hectares.

West of the B 9 and the Speyer-West district, south of Iggelheimer Straße and the forest recreation in the Speyer Forest , the battalion had a large military training area. Parts of the areas kept free by the practice run form a sandy inland dune landscape that offers a habitat for numerous rare plants and insects. The military training area was 96.61 hectares. It was divided into the fenced pioneer training area and the on-site training area.

At the intersection of the B 9 and the B 39 was the so-called polygon area, where driving school was once used on 17.93 hectares.

The location during the cold war

In the time of the Cold War, pioneer bridges were regularly built over the Rhine for training purposes. In the very south of the city there was a floating bridge on a body of water in the Speyer alluvial forest near the current mooring point for the Rheinhausen ferry .

At several points along the Rhine there were landing stages for floating bridges and solid NATO roads to these points. The fuel supply was also prepared by means of a pipeline.

In the Palatinate Forest, vehicles and war equipment for American soldiers were stored in large depots, which should have been flown in in the event of a Soviet attack and which should have been used to pull them to the front using this equipment.

The barracks also looked after an ammunition depot north of the barracks in the Schifferstadt forest, where Patriot anti-aircraft missiles were stored. These were later delivered to Israel during the Iraq war for the purpose of repelling Scud rocket attacks, and the site was closed.

The German pioneers worked in partnership with the French pioneers from the Normand barracks stationed in Speyer and the French Spahi Regiment 1 er régiment de Spahis , which was also stationed here . From 1945 to 1984 the Spahi tank reconnaissance regiment was housed in the Martin barracks. The extensive barracks complex now houses the Speyer Technology Museum . Today the regiment that took part in the Gulf War is stationed in Valence in the Rhone Valley . In the forest between Speyer-Nord and Speyer-West to the west of the railway line there was a French vehicle depot, the Lyautey quarter. The buildings were demolished and replaced by an industrial park. (The Normand barracks was built in 1888 by Franz Schöberl for the second Bavarian Pioneer Battalion, which had moved to Speyer in 1874 and was stationed in Speyer until 1918. During the French occupation from 1918–1930 after the First World War , the French 12th Pioneer Regiment was stationed in Speyer. Its commanding general was chosen by the French to give its name to the Normand barracks during its use after the Second World War, 1945–1997. Today the barracks area, the buildings of which are listed, is a 12 hectare residential area, the Normand quarter .)

The location after the closure

The Kurpfalz barracks have been used as a branch of the reception facility for asylum seekers in Trier since September 2015. From September 23, 2015, 600 refugees should move into the barracks.
