There are different versions of the banknotes in circulation. After independence in 1971, Pakistani banknotes remained in circulation, some of which are hand stamped with BANGLADESH. The first banknotes were issued from 1972. The low denominations of 1 and 2 taka, however, are not “banknotes” as they are not issued by the central bank but by the government. Central bank notes are available in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Taka. The current series dates from 2014/15 and shows the portrait of Mujibur Rahmans on the front . In addition, the central bank issues special banknotes on special occasions, the face value of which is related to the occasion:

  • 2011 - 40 Taka special banknote for 40 years of independence
  • 2012 - 60 taka for the 60th anniversary of the language movement
