occupation

Two Brothers is a German crime film by Nils Willbrandt from 2011. It is the 324th episode in the film series Polizeiruf 110 and the second case for Chief Inspector Olga Lenski, who supports Master Horst Krause in his 18th case.

action

Stud owner Karl Hartmann is found dead in one of the horse boxes and a valuable racehorse has disappeared. Chief Detective Olga Lenski and Chief Police Officer Horst Krause are called to the stud . As far as the evidence is concerned, the act does not seem to have been planned, but was carried out in a targeted manner. Lenski and Krause first interview Charlotte Hartmann and their sons Markus and Dennis, who work in the family business. It appears that the brothers are not very connected.

The first suspicion falls on the stable master Heiko Wessel, who was released a week ago. Lenski meets him in Berlin Hoppegarten on the racetrack. He admits to have been angry about the dismissal, but he worked for ten years at the stud, which connects rather than divides. From him the inspector learns about the tensions between Hartmann's sons. They wanted to impress their father at all costs and always compete against each other, which is why Dennis had bought this expensive racehorse, although he actually had no idea about horse racing. Markus was more accepted by his father and had the stud management under control. Overall, the family only seems to have worked for their work at the stud. Karl Hartmann was seen as an unapproachable and strict businessman who consequently had hardly any friends. Even Charlotte Hartmann suffered from her husband.

When Krause wants to check Heiko Wessel's alibi again, he follows him to an old stable area. Inadvertently he leads him to the stolen horse. Wessel is questioned and admits to have kidnapped the horse in order to give Dennis Hartmann a lesson because he had lost his job because of him. He would only have fetched the horse, he would have nothing to do with Hartmann's death.

Lenski falls into a very familiar relationship between Dennis Hartmann and the veterinarian Dr. Lutz, who takes care of the horses at the stud, medically. After being questioned several times, he admits that he had doped the racehorse at Dennis's request. Karl Hartmann found this out and threw Dennis from the court. For Lenski this would be a strong motive for murder, but Dennis vehemently denies having killed his father.

Krause discovers a connection between the pharmacist Alex Neuwald and Karl Hartmann. For him, there is no doubt that they had a sexual relationship with each other. Neuwald is then interrogated and he explains that Hartmann's wife had found out about it. She would have offered him money to end the relationship. After Lenski confronts Charlotte Hartmann with the facts, she admits to having killed her husband. She had followed him into the stable when he went there in the middle of the night when he noticed the theft. They argued and in her anger she would have grabbed a tool and slammed it.

Two brothers was produced by "Studio Hamburg Berlin Filmproduktion" on behalf of the RBB and shot in Potsdam and Satzkorn .

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv appreciates: “Nils Willbrandt's film has many wonderful, small moments, works (more than just) atmospheric settings of Brandenburg nature [...] harmoniously into the plot. A very fitting idea for this unity of landscape, characters and mood is the final comparison of the suspects at the crime scene: a kind of psychological session in the stable. The fact that this family drama is also convincing from a crime thriller makes one look very confidently into the future of the RBB 'police call'. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best possible rating (thumbs up) and wrote: “The case takes its time, but there are beautiful pictures and a duo of investigators that complement each other well.” As an overall conclusion, they drew: “Lyrical country crime with calm Investigate ".

T-Online, however, says: "Due to the multitude of entanglements that were also responsible for the somewhat constructed resolution, this very interesting message unfortunately got lost."
