Presidential elections in Namibia
Presidential elections in Namibia have been taking place in the southwest African state of Namibia since 1994 . The country's first president , Sam Nujoma , served from independence from March 21, 1990 to March 21, 1995 on the basis of a decision by SWAPO that won a majority of the votes in the 1989 parliamentary elections .
According to the Namibian constitution , the state president is elected every five years according to majority voting through direct , general and equal elections . Anyone who can collect more than 50 percent of the vote is elected President. If this is not the case, a runoff election of the two best candidates will decide .
