The Archbishop's Seminary Paderborn is the diocesan seminary of the Archdiocese of Paderborn . Candidates for the priesthood of the archdiocese live there during their studies at the theological faculty and, in particular, receive spiritual and practical training in the pastoral course that follows their studies.

history

Founded in 1777 by Prince-Bishop Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg , the Harsewinkelsche seminarium initially found its place in the south wing of the Jesuit college on Kamp, which was closed in 1773 and is now the theological faculty . In 1931 the seminary moved into the new building designed by Kurt Matern on Leostraße. After major renovations, the Archbishop's Seminary presents itself today together with the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia , the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism , the Leokonvikt as a location for offices of various diocesan associations in the middle of a spacious park.

Training for priests in the Archdiocese of Paderborn

"The goal of priestly formation is the Christian who, because of his human and spiritual maturity, his theological education and his pastoral qualifications, is suitable and ready to

  • to respond to the calling of God and to allow oneself to be taken into service by the bishop for the church as a priest in the form of celibacy for the sake of the kingdom of God,
  • to further develop his human, spiritual and professional abilities in such a way that he can perceive for a lifetime the mission of Christ to others in the respective pastoral situation in the priestly ordination. "
- Framework for the formation of priests (The German Bishops - Pastoral Letter and Declaration No. 73, Bonn 2003)

The duration of priest training in the Archdiocese of Paderborn is about eight years. The five-year study phase is preceded by a preparatory year, which was first carried out in Paderborn in the winter semester 2010/11. In the preparatory phase, candidates for the priesthood are introduced to life in the seminary and to a priestly spirituality . At the theological faculty, the propaedeutics take their first language courses and other introductory courses.

Following the preparatory course, the seminarians study ten semesters of theology with the aim of obtaining a Magister Theologiae . The five-year study phase at the theological faculty is interrupted by the free semesters in the third year, in which the seminarians study at a freely chosen university outside the archdiocesan milieu.

After successfully passing the study phase, the seminarians are admitted and thus episcopally accepted as candidates for deacon and priestly ordination in the two-year pastoral course. The ordination as a deacon takes place in the first year of the pastoral course in the university and market church in Paderborn. The end of the pastoral course and thus the priest training marks the priestly ordination in the High Cathedral in Paderborn and the posting to the first vicarage of the new priests.
