In the first half of the year the Torneo Metropolitano took place, the second half of the year was played in the Torneo Nacional. This mode was retained until 1985, when the way of playing in Europe was adapted and no longer played in the calendar year, but from summer to summer.
The Torneo Metropolitano was played with seventeen participants who each played against each other twice in the league system. It started on March 2 and ended on September 30, 1973.
At the end of the Torneo Metropolitano, CA Huracán was able to prevail and became Argentine football champions for the first and only time in the club's history. With coach César Luis Menotti and players like Carlos Babington , René Houseman and Jorge Carrascosa , Huracán ushered in a new era in Argentine football. The style of play that Menotti developed at Huracán also laid the foundation for Argentina's first World Cup triumph at the 1978 World Cup .
The Torneo Nacional was the second half-year championship. It began on October 5 and ended on December 29, 1973. First, two groups were formed, the two best-placed teams qualified for the final round. There these four teams each played against each other once, the team with the most points won there became national champions. The title in Torneo Nacional 1973 went to Rosario Central and thus the second championship in the club's history.
