Red Deer is a city (municipality status of a city ) in Alberta ( Canada ) and is located on the eponymous Red Deer River . It is located in the parklands between Calgary and Edmonton , at the northern end of the Palliser Triangle . With around 100,418 inhabitants (as of 2016) it is the third largest city in the province of Alberta after Calgary and Edmonton. The economic backbone of the city are oil production and agricultural industries . The area around the city is an important center for the petrochemical industry.

In terms of traffic, the city is developed through various highways. In a north-south direction, Red Deer is connected by Alberta Highway 2 with Calgary in the south and Edmonton in the north. The Alberta Highway 11 connects the community to the east with Rocky Mountain House and to the west it provides the connection to the Alberta Highway 12 . Furthermore, Alberta Highway 2A and Alberta Highway 11A have their start and end here.
Highway 2A also connects the community to the southwest local airport, Red Deer Regional Airport .
