Berntsen's government

Klaus Berntsen

The Berntsen government was formed in Denmark on July 5, 1910 by Klaus Berntsen von der Venstre and replaced the first Zahle government from Det Radliche Venstre . She was in office until June 21, 1913, when it was succeeded by the second Zahle government from Det Radliche Venstre.

In the previous elections to the Folketing on May 20, 1910, the Venstrereformpartiet and the Det Moderate Venstre ran again as a common party under the name Venstre and became the strongest party, with 57 of the 114 seats. On July 5, 1910, Klaus Berntsen was appointed Prime Minister ( Konseilspræsident ) by King Friedrich VIII , who was his personal friend . It was precisely because of the personal friendship that his government enjoyed the special support of the king. After his death and the succession by King Christian X. , however, criticism of the government was voiced, in which in particular the neglect of social issues was denounced. In 1913 he promised a revision of the constitution , but suffered a defeat in the Folketing elections on May 20, 1913. The Social Democrats under Thorvald Stauning became the strongest force, as on May 25, 1909, but received only 32 seats due to the electoral system. Thereupon Det Radikalische Venstre again formed a minority government under Carl Theodor Zahle.
