Reincarnate is the third studio album by the American metalcore / industrial metal band Motionless in White . It was released on September 15, 2014 in the UK and a day later in North America . In Germany , the album was released on September 19, 2014. The album was released via Fearless Records .

The album contains thirteen pieces with a playing time of just over an hour. Guest musicians are Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth , Tim Skold and Maria Brink from In This Moment . One bonus track, an acoustic version of Sinematic , is only featured on the digital version of the album. The album was produced by Dan Korneff and Chris Motionless , the singer of the band.

With Reincarnate , the group achieved chart success outside the United States for the first time . It debuted in the British and Australian album charts.

production

After the group had completed a short concert tour with For the Fallen Dreams and Like Moths to Flames , the group moved into the studio with producer Dan Korneff in early 2014 to work on the 2012 follow-up album by Infamous . In an interview with the British music magazine Rock Sound , singer Chris Motionless said that the production of the album was much easier compared to Infamous , because the group was not under time pressure during the work, which was the case with the previous work.

When singer Chris Motionless heard that Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth would work with the band, he was blown away because he sees his music influenced by Dani Filth, among others, and did not think that this collaboration would come about.

"Oh man, haha. I still can't believe the whole thing is true. That was such a huge thing for me. Dani and CRADLE OF FILTH are such a big influence to me. When I found out that he was going to do it, it almost blew me away, I would never have thought that. "

- Chris Motionless on Dani Filth

About the collaboration with Tim Skold , the singer said that he has now become a friend of the group, not least because he has worked with the group in the past.

The album was already announced on April 23, 2014 via social media with a possible release date on September 15, 2014 in the United Kingdom and one day later in the United States. The cover artwork was announced on June 11, 2014.

Album title

In an interview with the German FUZE Magazine , singer Chris Motionless revealed that the name of the album is to be understood symbolically and relates to the past of the musicians of Motionless in White. He said that the group wanted to present themselves in a new guise and make music that the band liked and no one else liked. He also said that he had felt enormous pressure from the fans in the production of the album.

music

Compared to the rock sound it was said that the album would be a musical intermediate between the debut album Creatures and the second album Infamous and would also have a further improved sound. Frank Engelhardt said in an interview with Chris Motionless that the song Wasp in particular stands out from the album due to its dark-wave- influenced dark mood. The singer said that Wasp is his personal favorite on the album because it is "different" from the rest of the album. The song was born out of his preference for groups like Depeche Mode and The Cure .

Single releases

With the album Puppets III (The Grand Finale) and the title of the same name, Reincarnate , two official singles were released. The first single, Reincarnate, was released on July 8, 2014 on a digital level. On August 5, 2014, Puppets III (The Grand Finale) was released, in which Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth can be heard as a guest singer.

The official music video for Reincarnate was also released on the day the album was released in the States . The music video was produced by Chad Michael Ward, who already worked with Marilyn Manson and Combichrist . For Puppets III there is a lyrics video.

Guest musician

As a guest musician, the group was able to win in Dani Filth , the singer of the dark metal band Cradle of Filth , as well as in Tim Skold and In-This-Moment front woman Maria Brink . Dani Filth is in the song Puppets III (The Grand Finale) . Maria Brink in Contemptress and Tim Skold on Final Dictvm .

Since the group had to do without a drummer after Brandon Richter left , Tom Hane stepped in as a session musician for the studio recordings. In the tenth song of the album, which is called Wasp , you can also hear Dessa Marie Poljak.

Pre-sale phase

Visitors to the Warped Tour 2014 had the opportunity at the label's booth to pre-order the new album before the actual pre-order phase began. The buyers then received a special laminate, which later authorized them to download the album and the bonus song, an acoustic version of Sinematic .

On September 11, 2014, the group started a scavenger hunt . In eleven different locations in the United States , Canada and the United Kingdom , small, wooden coffins were hidden with which to unlock songs from the new album. Once all of the coffins were found, the album was released in full as a pre-stream from the band's website. In order to find the coffins, the group announced the respective city and the location coordinates where a coffin was located on Facebook.

tour

In order to promote their album, Motionless in White played for the first time on all concerts of the Warped Tour 2014 in the USA and Canada on the main stage. In September the group started on another USA concert tour, this time as the opening act for Bring Me the Horizon and A Day to Remember . This US tour ended in October. After completing this concert tour, a European tour as the opening act for Lacuna Coil , which took place between October and November , immediately followed . In February and March 2015, the Beyond the Barricade Tour followed , which took place in the United States and Canada and was accompanied by For Today and Ice Nine Kills . On the first weekend in June 2015, the group will appear for the first time at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . From July to September the group will tour North America with Bullet for My Valentine as the opening act for Lamb of God and Slipknot .

success

In the first week after its release, Reincarnate was already sold 31,000 times, resulting in the group's first top ten placement in the US album charts . The album debuted at number 9 in the US charts in the week of October 3, 2014. In addition, the group made chart entries outside the USA for the first time with the album. In the UK , Reincarnate debuted at number 43. In Australia , the album even landed at number 19.

Compared to the previous album Infamous , which sold a total of 83,000 times within just under two years, Reincarnate managed to catch up almost 38 percent of the 2012 album's sold circulation within a week. On March 31, 2015, the album was nominated in the Album of the Year category and the single of the same name in the Song of the Year category at the Alternative Press Music Awards .

reception

Jason Pettigrew of Alternative Press gave it four out of five possible ratings and wrote that the album had received an even darker influence. He describes the song Puppets III as a contrast between Black Metal in the style of Anaal Nathrakh and AFI . According to Rock Sound, the group is continuing to build up the sound that they played on the previous Infamous and refining it as much as possible. However, songs like Everyone Sells Cocaine are criticized for being too close to Marilyn Manson and Puppets III is not popular either.

Sebastian Berning from Powermetal.de is of the opinion that the song Puppets III through Dani Filth's contribution shows borrowings from Black Metal. Through the use of keyboards in the album, the sound is reminiscent of a mix of Marilyn Manson and Korns Untouchables . The only point of criticism is the playing time of just under an hour. Frank Engelhardt from FUZE Magazine is of the opinion that Motionless in White is one of the few groups that manage to understand entire genres of music. The group continues to develop its style and has the courage to break new ground. The shares in Metalcore have almost completely disappeared and are only available in bonds.

Everything we are, what we stand for, has been reborn. Of course there are now things that were already heard on our last album, our sound is in everything we've done so far. We are presenting all of this in fresh packaging, which is why the title is so fitting. We wrote an album that should primarily make us happy, not anyone else. We felt an enormous amount of pressure from our fans that we had to do a very certain type of music or special things in our songs, or else they left us behind. "
