Renate Richter (born April 28, 1938 in Magdeburg ) is a German actress .

Life

From 1956 to 1959, Richter trained as an actor at the State Drama School in Berlin-Schöneweide . She then began as a theater actress at the Brandenburg State Theater . Another theater station followed in the provinces, at the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam . From 1962 to 1970 she was a permanent member of the Berliner Ensemble . There she played in various theater plays by Bertolt Brecht : the Genevieve in Die Tage der Commune , Yvette Pottier in Mother Courage and Her Children , the title role in Turandot or the Congress of the White Washer and the title role in Die Mutter . Richter also appeared in plays of modernism and contemporary theater; she played leading roles in plays by Dario Fo and Seán O'Casey, among others .

From 1973 to 1976 she was engaged at the Zürcher Schauspielhaus , where she played Lady Anne in Shakespeare's historical drama Richard III. and who played Shen Te in The Good Man of Sezuan . However, Richter returned to the Berliner Ensemble. She also gave guest appearances at the Deutsches Theater Berlin .

From 1970 to 1973 she was a member of the actors' ensemble of television in the GDR . In 1973 she starred with Hilmar Thate in the television film Cement . She showed one of her “most impressive achievements”, alongside Rolf Ludwig , in the title role of the multi-part television series Die unheilige Sophia (1974/1975). She endowed her film characters with "charm and wit." She often played under the direction of her husband Manfred Wekwerth , who was also the artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble in the 1980s.

Richter also appeared in the GDR as a singer and entertainer , including in the 1972 television show People make songs - songs make people . She also gave recitals with songs by Bertolt Brecht. With this song program she went on tour in Europe, including France , Sweden , Finland , Greece , Austria , Switzerland , Great Britain and Cuba . She performed with the program in 2006 in Istanbul . She occasionally took on musical roles on stage and in film. In 1979 she played Lilian Hollyday in the film adaptation of the musical Happy End by Bertolt Brecht and Elisabeth Hauptmann ; her partner was Wolf Kaiser , directed by Manfred Wekwerth.

In the 1990s she could still be seen as a stage actress in touring productions . Occasionally she took on smaller television roles, among others on the side of Günter Pfitzmann . In the television series Der Havelkaiser , she played Lotte Kuckuck, who worked for him for many years. In the ARD fairy tale film adaptation of The Princess and the Pea , she played the role of a merciful monastery sister who heads an orphanage in 2010 .

Renate Richter was married to the theater director Manfred Wekwerth until his death in July 2014 . Their daughter is the philosopher Christine Weckwerth . Richter lives in Berlin-Grünau .
