The Ge 3/3 is a three-axle electric shunting locomotive of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) .

history

Ge 3/3 215 in Samedan

At the beginning of the 1980s, the RhB showed a bottleneck in shunting locomotives, as the converted and almost 70-year-old Ge 2/4 became more and more prone to failure due to their age. Their performance was also no longer sufficient to be able to work economically. The RhB therefore decided to purchase two modern and powerful shunting locomotives at the same time as ordering the second series of the Ge 4/4 II .

The two machines with road numbers 214 and 215 were put into operation in 1984.

technology

Since good experiences had been made with the first series of the Ge 4/4 II, it was decided to build the two shunting locomotives using thyristor technology as well. The thyristors together with diodes a continuously controllable rectifier which supplies the DC series-wound motor with wavy direct current.

The mechanical part was built by Robert Aebi (RACO). As with the Ge 4/4 II, the electrical part comes from BBC . Some components of the vehicles - for example the traction motor and vacuum pump - correspond to the corresponding components of the second series Ge 4/4 II .

In 2018, a complete pneumatic renewal was carried out on locomotive 214. Since then, it has had the same compressor as the Ge 4/4 II and a new air dryer. As a result of the renovation, the external appearance has changed due to an additional maintenance opening. In addition, a ventilation grille was attached to the side and the front.

commitment

The orange-painted locomotives have a top speed of 40 km / h and weigh 33 t . Their hourly output is 425 kW at 27 km / h. They are used in shunting: locomotive 214 in Chur and 215 in Samedan .
