Robert Munster

Robert Münster (born March 3, 1928 in Düren ; † March 27, 2021 ) was a German musicologist whose main research interests were Mozart , Brahms , Bavarian music history and music in Bavarian monasteries.

Life

After the early death of her father, a general practitioner, the mother moved from Düren to Munich in 1932 . After finishing school, Münster studied musicology at the University of Munich from 1949 to 1956 . His professors included Rudolf von Ficker and Georg Reichert. In 1956 Münster received his doctorate with a thesis on Karl Joseph Toeschi's symphonies. From 1957 to 1959, Münster was the scientific assistant to the editor of the New Mozart Edition , Ernst Fritz Schmid . In 1961 he passed the state examination for the higher library service, in 1969 he became director of the music collection of the Bavarian State LibraryMunich, a position he held until 1991. At the State Library he designed numerous exhibitions, each with catalogs, including Carl Orff in 1970 . Münster wrote, among other things. numerous writings on the music history of Bavaria, the processing of which was very important to him. Furthermore, since 1959 he has been researching old music together with Alois Kirchberger in Bavarian monasteries and churches. The often astonishing finds have been cataloged in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek since 1964 with funding from the German Research Foundation and, together with holdings from aristocratic music collections, published in the catalogs of Bayerischer Musiksammlungen (Munich: Henle) published by the General Directorate . A selection has appeared since 1967 in the records - later CD series - Musica Bavarica, published by Kirchberger and Münster . At first it was mainly monastic vocal and instrumental music. Secular music followed later. B. by court composers of the Blue Elector Max Emanuel , the Elector Max III. Joseph and the Bavarian kings Max I, Ludwig I and Ludwig II.

Sensational finds were the previously unknown symphony KV 19a and the second version of the Latin motet Exsultate, jubilate KV 165 / 158a by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . In 1987 Musica Bavaric a was awarded the Bavarian State Foundation Prize, and it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017.

Münster was an associate member of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy and the Academy of the Augustinian Canons of Windesheim .
