Robert von Wachholtz

Robert August Wilhelm von Wachholtz (born November 26, 1816 in Braunschweig ; † December 27, 1897 there ) was lieutenant general of the Duke of Braunschweig .

Life

His parents were Major General Friedrich Ludwig von Wachholtz (1783–1841) and his wife Karoline Johanne Henriette, born von Girsewald (1787–1868). His father was known as the author of the notes about his experiences in the old Prussian army and with the black band of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig . In 1860 von Wachholtz sued the master carpenter Ernst Carl Külbel for insult and defamationthe reputation of his father, because Külbel had refuted the participation of Friedrich Ludwig von Wachholtz in the rescue of the wounded duke in a factual report about the battle. Von Wachholtz lost the trial.

Military career

Coming to the Cadet Corps on April 20, 1833 von Wachholtz was first appointed Portepee Ensign on April 25, 1834 before he was employed as a Second Lieutenant in the Leib Battalion on April 23, 1836 and promoted to Prime Lieutenant on April 11, 1840 . After working as a teacher in the cadet corps from 1841 to 1846, he graduated from the General Staff Academy in Hanover in 1846/47 and took part in the campaign of the X German Federal Army Corps in Schleswig in 1848 as a general staff officer in the staff of the mobile 3rd Infantry Brigade . After the war he was transferred to the infantry regiment as a captain and company commander. During the years 1849 to 1867 he was used partly in front service, partly in the general staff and rose to lieutenant colonel . When Braunschweig joined the North German Confederation , the Braunschweig Army was reorganized. Von Wachholtz was put up for disposal on October 3, 1867 , but continued to be used as the commander of the Braunschweig II Landwehr district .

From there, Duke Wilhelm appointed him his wing adjutant on April 15, 1872 and at the same time entrusted him with the management of the adjutant general's affairs and the inspection of the gendarmerie corps . In this position Wachholtz received the on April 24, 1873 and on April 25, 1881 character as a colonel and major general .

After the Duke's death on October 13, 1884, he remained in the same position with the new regent of the Duchy, Prince Albrecht of Prussia . He led the negotiations, on the basis of which a military convention was concluded with Prussia and the Braunschweig troops joined the Prussian Army in 1886 . He was appointed Adjutant General of the Prince Regent on May 8, 1889, conferring the character of Lieutenant General.

Von Wachholtz was the last to wear the old black uniform and a well-known person in town and country. He was honorary chairman of the Braunschweig regional association and an honorary member of the civil association of the city of Braunschweig.

He married Ottonie Freiin von Münchhausen on November 18, 1852 (* March 3, 1833, † December 27, 1897). The following children were born from the marriage:
