The Rock'n'Roll Butterfahrt (RnRB) is a music festival on the island of Helgoland . The musical focus is on groups of the punk rock genre. According to its own name, it is "the largest smallest festival in the world".

history

The first edition of the Rock'n'Roll Butterfahrt program took place in 2003 on one evening in the North Sea Hall on Helgoland. In 2006 the program was extended to two days and also moved from the hall to the offshore island of Dune . The event area is limited on three sides by sand dunes ; access is via the south beach .

The Mimmi’s have been the headliners of the festival since the beginning . It has been opened by the shanty choir Helgoländer Karkfinken since 2011 . A special feature of the festival is that the participating bands are not announced until all tickets have been sold. Nevertheless, the Butterfahrt has been sold out regularly since 2011; since 2012 the program has been extended to three days.

The Union

A sponsoring association has existed since 2011, whose statutory purpose is to promote young bands, promote culture, organize and hold music festivals, and promote, organize and hold other music and cultural events. The purpose of the statutes is achieved, among other things, by carrying out the Rock'n'Roll Butterfahrt. Club members have the right of first refusal for tickets for the Rock'n'Roll Butterfahrt. The association currently has 624 members. (Status: February 2018) In 2016, a stele for deceased fans of the Rock'n'Roll Butterfahrt was erected in the dune's cemetery .

Media coverage

In 2014, the preparations for the festival were accompanied by a film team. The documentary "The Rock 'n' Roll Butterfahrt - When Punks Populate Helgoland" was broadcast on RTL as part of the 30 Minuten Deutschland series.

In 2015 Michael Kessler visited the festival with a camera team. Excerpts can be seen in the program Kessler's Expedition .
