Roger Smith (born January 20, 1964 in Freeport ) is a retired Bahamian tennis player .

Life

Smith graduated from Ohio State University and was voted in the All-American selection. He became a professional tennis player in 1987 and in the same year was able to win his first individual title on the ATP Challenger Tour in Bossonnens by beating Alexander Mronz in the final . He also won the doubles competition at the Challenger tournament in Munich with Tony Mmoh . In 1988 he won his first double title on the ATP World Tour at the side of Paul Wekesa in Tel Aviv . In total, he was able to win three double titles in the course of his career, and once again he was in a final. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1988 with position 96 in singles and in 1991 with position 73 in doubles.

His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of the US Open in 1994. In the doubles competition, he also reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in 1990.

Smith played 48 singles and 26 doubles games for the Bahamian Davis Cup team between 1985 and 2000 . His greatest success with the team was participation in the qualifying round of the world group in 1993. In the 0-5 defeat against the USA , he lost his singles games against Andre Agassi and MaliVai Washington, as well as on the side of Mark Knowles against the American doubles from Patrick McEnroe and Richey Reneberg . At the 1992 Summer Olympics , he competed in singles and doubles. He lost his first round game against Andrei Cherkassov and was eliminated on the side of Mark Knowles against the Australian doubles also in the first round. At the 1996 Summer Olympics he only appeared in doubles, again with Mark Knowles. They won their first round encounter against the Portuguese doubles and were subject to the Croatians Saša Hiršzon and Goran Ivanišević . At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , he took part as a coach of the Bahamian team.
