Roland Zimmer (born June 16, 1933 in Markneukirchen ; † January 4, 1993 in Weimar ) was a German music teacher and professor of guitar at the Liszt School of Music Weimar .

Life

Zimmer was born in 1933 as the son of the guitar maker Otto Zimmer (1902–1981) and the clerk Maria Zimmer, née Becher (1904–1983) in Markneukirchen. They lived and worked first on Klingenthaler Strasse and later on Erlbacher Strasse . From 1935 to 1945 Zimmer studied at the local elementary school. He passed his Abitur at the secondary school (today: Julius-Mosen-Gymnasium ) in Oelsnitz / Vogtl. from. Zimmer attended the Markneukirchen music school and learned guitar , piano and violoncello with Herold Pöhland , Walter Götze and Ernst Rommel in Leipzig.

From 1952 to 1956 he studied guitar with Ursula Peter (1924–1989) at the folk music department of the Liszt School of Music Weimar . He finished his studies with the state examination in music education . He attended the master class of Andrés Segovia in Italian Siena .

From 1956 to 1959 he was an aspirant and teacher at the Weimar Academy of Music. In 1959 he became senior assistant and in 1961 guitar lecturer . At the same time he held a teaching position at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music in Leipzig from 1974 to 1978 . From 1983 he was head of department in Weimar. Since 1983 he has been chairman of the permanent guitar jury at the Ministry of Culture in the GDR. In 1985 he was appointed professor .

Zimmer played as a soloist in the Eastern Bloc and Asia , as well as in Western Europe . Musically, he concentrated on works by Joaquín Turina , John Dowland , Napoléon Coste , Manuel de Falla , Luis de Milán , Francisco Tárrega , Hans Neusidler , Robert de Visée , Fernando Sor , Mauro Giuliani and Niccolò Paganini . He also included composers of his time such as Federico Moreno Torroba , Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco , Ernst Krenek , Heitor Villa-Lobos and Rudolf Wagner-Régeny in his program.

He was a member of several chamber music associations where he devoted himself to playing the lute . Zimmer worked in the Capella Fidicinia of the Leipzig University , in the Telemann-Ensemble Leipzig and the Pro Arte Antiqua Lipsiensis . He was also a member of the Leipzig Consort , which focused on contemporary music .

Private

Zimmer married Christine Zimmer in 1952, with whom he had a son. After the divorce he was married to the harpist Evelyn Zimmer, nee Fiedler. She worked at the State Theater in Eisenach .

Roland Zimmer youth competition

Since 1998 the SAXONIADE eV and the Bund Deutscher Zupfmusiker - Landesverband Sachsen eV have organized the Roland Zimmer youth competition for solo instrument guitar, mandolin and zither .

Prizes, honors and awards

  • 1953: Honorary diploma at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Bucharest (Romania)
  • 1955: Gold medal at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Warsaw (Poland)
  • 1957: Gold medal at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow (Soviet Union)
