Rolf Niczky

Rolf Niczky (born January 22, 1881 in Munich , † July 14, 1950 in Klais ) was a German painter , graphic artist and illustrator .

Life

Niczky was a son of the painter Eduard Niczky and his wife Franziska, née Stauber, a daughter of the Munich painter Karl Stauber . After attending Munich's Maximiliansgymnasium from 1890 to 1896, he first briefly studied at the Munich School of Applied Arts and privately with Anton Ažbé , then at the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Franz von Stuck and was also a pupil of Franz von Lenbach .

In 1901 he founded the exhibition and artist association Phalanx in Munich with Wassily Kandinsky , Waldemar Hecker , Wilhelm Hüsgen and other artist friends , of which he was the first chairman. Wassily Kandinsky took over the post in 1902 after his resignation. In 1913 he married the merchant's daughter Bella Rosenberg in Berlin; the marriage was divorced in 1917. In 1914 Niczky's son Joachim was born, who later became known as a photographer under the name Joe . Rolf Niczky went to Berlin after the First World War . From 1924 he taught fashion illustration at the private art and fashion school Schule Reimann founded in 1902 by the sculptor Albert Reimann (1874–1976) . He also worked for Elsner Verlag . A residence at Hauptstrasse  34 is known in the Schöneberg district . At the end of the 1930s he moved to the Upper Bavarian village of Klais, where he earned the nickname "Baron von Klais". In 1943 he entered into a second marriage in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Niczky made numerous illustrations for magazines such as the Elegant World , Sport im Bild , Funny Leaves , Die Dame , Der Junggeselle , Ulk and others, and also designed several books. There were also postcards and posters. One of his well-known series of lithographs from the 1920s was titled “Hühnerhof”. In addition to scenes from the sophisticated world, he also drew current, humorous-satirical and political topics. In 1936 he was represented at the Berlin exhibition "Deutsche Werbegraphik".

He was a member of the Association of German Commercial Graphics and the Association of German Illustrators .
