biography

He was born the son of a private scholar and grew up in Upper Bavaria , Saxony , the Netherlands and Switzerland . At the age of 17 he passed the Abitur . During the Second World War he was trained as a photographer with the Air Force . In the post-war period he lived in Garmisch and worked there as the laboratory manager of a photo shop. In the following years he was theater - actor and businessman (LPs / music business).

He started sailing in 1956 when he bought his first sailing boat, the Hansa-Jolle Solveig I with hull number 79 from the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard . With this ship began his “sailing career” on Lake Starnberg . Three years later he undertook trips across the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and to the Gulf of Aden .

Long with 5.6 meters with cabin equipped plywood boat Solveig II - type "Caprice", built on the Isle of Wight , he made 1963 his first Atlantic passage from Italy to New York City . The crossing of the Atlantic with such a small boat made Gebhard known in one fell swoop in the USA, while the reaction of the media and the public in Germany was rather restrained. From then on, Gebhard earned his living from public lectures on his sailing tours.

A short time later he acquired the cruising cruiser Solveig III - type "Condor 7" from the Stöberl shipyard in Eggstätt, with which he sailed around the world twice with one hand (1967 to 1970 and 1975 to 1979). In 1983 he and his future wife Angelika Zilcher started a third, eight-year circumnavigation of the world including a six-month journey from Cairns / Australia to Emden / Germany on a Hallberg-Rassy 42 .

Among other things, he received the Trans-Ocean Prize for his travels in 1991 .

In 1991 Gebhard founded the " Society for the Rescue of Dolphins " (GRD). From 1993 Rollo Gebhard concentrated on expedition trips by motorboat. His first voyage took him with the Solveig V (type Linssen Sturdy 36) 2000 km (1080  nm ) over the rivers and canals between the Elbe and Oder . In 1995/96 trips followed through the waters of Northern Europe to Saint Petersburg . In 1998/99 he drove the Solveig VII (Linssen Sturdy 400 type) across the nine Danube countries to the coasts of Ukraine , Turkey and Russia.

Further trips with this ship were:

During this circumnavigation of Europe on the eastern route through the inland from 2001 to 2003, he covered around 15,000 km (8100 nm).
