The Roque Nublo ( Spanish for "cloud rock") is a mountain on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria ( Spain ). Its eponymous summit structure, a striking basalt rock , reaches 1813  msnm and is therefore one of the highest elevations in Gran Canaria. It is considered the island's landmark .

The Roque Nublo is the third height on the island of Gran Canaria, after the Morro de la Agujereada with 1,956 meters and the Pico de las Nieves with 1,949 meters.

Location and surroundings

The Roque Nublo is located in the center of Gran Canaria in the municipality of Tejeda , the border with the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana runs only about one kilometer southeast. He is surrounded by the eponymous nature reserve Monumento natural del Roque nublo which ha with an area of 451.8 covers the entire mountain and part of the 263 square kilometers of natural park Parque Rural del Nublo is. About four kilometers to the east is the 1949 meter high Pico de las Nieves , the highest mountain on the island. The closest towns are Ayacata , about two kilometers south, and La Culata , about two kilometers northeast.

The summit rock Roque Nublo rises about 65 meters above its surroundings, a relatively flat summit plateau. 500 meters southeast of the Roque Nublo is the 1737  m high Roque de San José , another striking rock tower is the El Fraile ( The Monk ). Immediately next to the Roque Nublo is the significantly lower Roque Rana ( frog rock ).

geology

Roque Rana (left) and Roque Nublo, two volcanic vents made of basalt breccia

The Roque Nublo is the remnant of what was once a much higher stratovolcano . The formation of this volcano began about 4.2 to 4.6 mya ago with thick mafic lava flows that overlaid the eroded remains of an earlier Miocene volcano and penetrated up to 20 km to the coast. The eruptions lasted about 1.5 million years, with the extracted rock increasingly changing to trachyte and phonolite about 3.9 mya ago . The now more explosive eruptions in the summit area produced breccia-like ignimbrite deposits until the eruptions ended about 3 mya ago due to the intrusion of phonolithic vent plugs . Overall, the volume of the volcanic complex is estimated at 200 km³, the height of the volcano should have been at least 2500  m , but possibly also well over 3000  m . Since then the volcano has been subject to severe erosion . Rock deposits from huge landslides can be found up to a distance of 25 km. The summit rock of Roque Nublo, a former plug of a volcanic vent, was subject to erosion to a lesser extent than the softer surrounding rock due to its harder basalt breccia and was thus preserved as a hardy .

Flora and fauna

Vegetation below the summit rock

On the flanks the vegetation of the mountain is dominated by extensive pine forests , in addition, especially on the summit plateau, only sparsely overgrown rocky sections can be found. They also include sage , Celosia argentea , broom , spurge and feverfew to find. Several species occurring here, including the genera adder heads , vetch (Vicia) and aeonium, are endemic to Gran Canaria .

The bird fauna has rare subspecies of the colt , southern gray shrike , gray wagtail and blue tit. The reptiles are represented by roller skinks .

tourism

Parking and bus stop at Roque Nublo

The Roque Nublo plateau is a popular hiking destination and can be easily reached via well-developed hiking trails. From the road to the south-east of the mountain, which leads up to an altitude of 1581  m , the ascent to Roque Nublo takes about half an hour. From the summit plateau the view extends to the Teide on Tenerife .

The summit rock of Roque Nublo is reserved for climbers . As the oldest climbing area on the island, it has over ten routes , and there are around ten routes on the Roque rana. Difficulties range from 4a to 7b + (French scale).

history

The Roque Nublo was important as a sacred mountain at the time of the Canarios (natives of Gran Canaria) . They had set up a cult site here, where sacrifices were made to the sun god. In folk songs such as the Sombra del Nublo ( Shadow of the Cloud Rock), the rock is still very important today.

The first ascent of the rock was made on June 20, 1932 by the German engineers Ranschert, Langenbacher and Wolffschmitt via the Alemana route (V + A0) in the southeast. They had come to Gran Canaria to help develop the port of Las Palmas . The most difficult route, Vía del Alemán ( Weg des Deutschen , 7b +), through the south-east flank is named after them.
