After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded state of Burgenland since 1921.

History of Rudersdorf

Historical photo of Rudersdorf (1901)

There are several theories for the origin of the place name “Rudersdorf”. The first explanation is very simple: In the old days there was a lake between Fürstenfeld and today's Rudersdorf, on the banks of which the Prince of Fürstenfeld had a hunting lodge and a large hunting area. Since the princes rowed over to the castle, the little village that grew up around the castle was called “Rudersdorf”.

According to another version, Rudersdorf is derived from the personal name Ruodolf, in Hungarian Rodolf, based on the old form of the name Ruodolvesdorf = "Village of Rudolf". In 1391 Rudersdorf appears under the Magyar name “Radofalva” in the document intended by King Sigismund for Ladislaus von Sáró. The Rudersdorf customs station was a so-called thirtieth office . Thirties were former Hungarian customs posts along the western border. The term “thirty” goes back to the fact that the thirtieth part of a commodity was levied as customs on import and later also on export. This customs clearance was introduced under the first Hungarian King Stephen .

As early as the Middle Ages, around 1336, Rudersdorf was a thirtieth place and a toll station. At the end of the 19th century the thirty-year office in Rudersdorf was closed. Rudersdorf belonged to Güssing Castle until around 1380 .

History of Dobersdorf

Dobersdorf is mentioned in writing for the first time in 1157 in the letter of the Güssing landlord Walfer . The German name Dobersdorf goes back to the Slavonic form "Dobrovnuk" and means forest village or Waldhütter. It is believed that the place was inhabited by Slavs around the year 870. In 1428 Dobraflava became part of the Güssing domain. In 1605 the place was destroyed by Haiduken . In 1698 Dobersdorf belonged to the parish Königsdorf-Zahling . In 1779 the construction of a chapel began. In 1830 today's church was built in honor of the Visitation of Mary, and in 1871 the first school building was built. As a result of the great floods of the Lafnitz, a dam was built in 1927. After the Second World War, the community began expanding the village streets and building a local water pipe. On January 1, 1971, the Dobersdorf community was merged with the Rudersdorf community.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are numerous small and medium-sized businesses in the community. Among other things, one can find a branch of the Sattler company and the Katzbeck company in Rudersdorf, which are also among the largest employers in the region.

Rudersdorf is located directly on Gleisdorfer Straße B65, which connects the south motorway (A2) with the Heiligenkreuz border crossing in the Lafnitztal . To improve the infrastructure in the region and to relieve the communities in the region, ASFINAG is building the Fürstenfeld expressway from the southern motorway to the border crossing in Heiligenkreuz. However, this expressway project is very controversial among the population.
