Rudi Ogrissek

Rudi Heinz Ogrissek (born September 4, 1926 in Groß Döbern , † September 27, 1999 in Dresden ) was a German cartographer , geodist and historian .

Life

After graduating from secondary school in Görlitz , Rudi Ogrissek did labor and military service from 1943 , was relocated to Belgium and was taken prisoner by the British there . In 1946 he began an apprenticeship as a surveying technician at the R. Menzel surveying office in Görlitz, which he completed in 1951. He then worked as a surveying technician at the Niesky district surveying office until 1952 and was then deputy working group leader at the Saxony surveying service in Dresden until 1953.

His high school put Rudi Ogrissek 1953 at the Workers 'and Peasants' Faculty (ABF) of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , and then began here a study of the history and geography under the formative influence of Professor Edgar Lehmann at the Faculty of Arts . From 1957 he worked as a map editor and from 1959 as a department head at the VEB Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig. From October 1, 1962 to August 31, 1972, Rudi Ogrissek was the chief map editor and later deputy editor-in-chief at VEB Hermann Haack, Geographisch-Kartographische Anstalt Gotha / Leipzig.

In 1959 he received his doctorate on the subject of "Settlement form and social structure of agricultural settlements in Eastern Upper Lusatia since the 16th century" at the University of Leipzig and completed his habilitation there in 1969 on the subject of "Basics of optimal design of economic history maps as a knowledge store for historical science and historical geography". In 1971 he became a lecturer for cartography at the Technical University of Dresden and in 1972 received the Facultas Docendi for the subject of thematic cartography . From September 1, 1972 to February 29, 1992 Rudi Ogrissek was full professor for cartography and until December 31, 1990 also headed the cartography department at the Geodesy and Cartography Section of the Technical University of Dresden. From September 1, 1977 to September 30, 1980, he was also Section Director.

The focus of his scientific work was on the areas of map design , map editing, theoretical cartography and the history of cartography. He also wrote the world's first monograph on theoretical cartography, which focuses on his structural model of theoretical cartography for teaching and research . Overall, the work of Rudi Ogrissek has had a major impact on the development of both practical and theoretical cartography in the German Democratic Republic . The cartographic training at the Technical University of Dresden was able to benefit greatly from his work.

Ogrissek died in Dresden in 1999 and was buried in the Leubnitz-Neuostra cemetery.
