Rudolf Borch

Rudolf Borch (* 16th June 1891 in Flensburg , † 14. October 1949 in Braunschweig ) was a German teacher, writer, Schopenhauer - bibliographer and genealogists .

Life

The son of a merchant, Rudolf Borch, moved with his parents from Schleswig to Wolfenbüttel in 1891 . There he graduated from the citizen school and then the municipal secondary school. He trained as a teacher and graduated from the teachers' seminar in the spring of 1911 . Borch subsequently worked as an assistant teacher at schools in Linden (Wolfenbüttel) , Greene , Pillowbrück and Seinstedt . In 1918 he got a permanent position in Allrode in the Harz Mountains and last taught in Braunschweig.

Borch was a supporter of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer from an early age . After the publication of his work Introduction to a Spiritual History in 1912, the philosopher Paul Deussen suggested him as bibliographer of the Schopenhauer Society and its yearbook founded by Deussen in 1911 . Borch took on this task until his death in 1949. He was known to the writers Richard Dehmel , Johannes Schlaf and Richard von Schaukal . Together with Ludwig Bäte and Kurt Meyer-Rotermund, he published several works on Johannes Schlaf. In addition, his literary work includes a biography of Alexander von Humboldt and a picture atlas on the history of education (1920).

Borch conducted genealogical research for years, in particular on the family history of the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauß and the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing . In 1925 he was a co-founder and longstanding chairman of the Braunschweiger Genealogical Evening Association . In 1927 he set up the Ostfälische Familienkundliche Kommission in Hildesheim and became its managing director.

Borch is listed in the Braunschweig address book , which was last published before his death in 1942, with the address Sophienstraße 31. He died in Braunschweig in October 1949. His extensive private library with a significant proportion of Schopenhauer literature is now owned by the Braunschweig City Library . The handwritten estate has been kept by the Braunschweig City Archives since 1959 . A striking portrait of Borch, created in oil by Ulfert Wilke in 1935 , is in the possession of the Braunschweig Municipal Museum . It is shown on the cover of the Braunschweig Biographical Lexicon .
