history
The collectors' association of honest clothing sellers
A citizens' initiative in the run-up to the city's millennium in 1861 prepared the establishment of a collection of cultural and artistic achievements by the citizens of Braunschweig. To this end, the historian and private scholar Carl Schiller founded a collectors' association in 1859, which brought together objects worth preserving in the Duchy of Braunschweig. The association, based on the old goods dealers of the time, the “Kleiderseller”, known as “ The honest clothing sellers of Braunschweig ” still exists today. The city archive opened in 1861 and the city library were supplemented by the city museum on May 1, 1865. The collection, which was initially set up in the Neustadtrathaus , was managed on a voluntary basis by Carl Schiller († 1874), who can be regarded as the founder of the museum. He donated his extensive private collection to the museum.
New building on Löwenwall in 1906; Museum management
The first full-time director was Franz Fuhse in 1898 , under whose management the new building on Löwenwall , created in 1906 by Max Osterloh , was moved until 1932 . The construction was made possible by private donations, in particular from the Brunswick businessman, world traveler and collector Carl Götting († 1899). From 1932 to 1952 the historian and respected numismatist Wilhelm Jesse († 1971) was director of the museum. Under the direction of the museum, Bert Bilzers († 1980), who ran from 1953 to 1977 , an extensive renovation was completed in 1976. The longstanding museum director Gerd Spies (1977–2003) was succeeded on March 1, 2003 by Martin Eberle. After his move to the Schloss Friedenstein Gotha Foundation in 2007, Kurt Winkler took over the management. He left the museum in 2008. Following interim management by Erika Eschebach , who had been deputy director until then , Cecilie Hollberg took over the management from 2010 to 2015. She was temporarily followed by Heidemarie Anderlik. Peter Joch has been director since February 1, 2017 .
The Friends of the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig e. V. “After a four-year conversion and renovation phase, the museum reopened on June 30, 2012.

Main building at Löwenwall
The Städtisches Museum Braunschweig has been showing the following departments in the Haus am Löwenwall since it reopened in 2012.
- In the “Gemäldegalerie”, works from the 18th to 20th centuries are displayed. Century, with a focus on Brunswick painters such as Pascha Johann Friedrich Weitsch and his son Friedrich Georg Weitsch .
- In the “Arts and Crafts” section, examples of Braunschweig furniture, silver work, Fürstenberg porcelain, Braunschweig faience work and Stobwasser lacquer work are presented.

Among them is a 1879 made fortepiano that belonged to the pianist Clara Schumann . A representative overview of instruments from the Braunschweig violin-making family Rautmann is shown.
- The "Ethnology" department, which has more than 8,000 objects, shows non-European ancestral masks and figures, ceramics and metalwork. The ethnological collection was looked after by Richard Andree from 1893 to 1903 and by Otto Finsch from 1904 to 1917 .
- The “Formsammlung Dexel” was built and managed from 1942 to 1955 by the painter and graphic artist Walter Dexel (1890–1973) on behalf of the city of Braunschweig. His son Thomas Dexel took over the management in 1955 , who also expanded the collection to include modern appliances. The holdings include simple everyday objects from antiquity to the present day. The shape collection has been part of the municipal museum since 1963. While there were separate exhibition rooms in the Villa Gerloff at Löwenwall 16 until 2002 , the holdings can now be viewed in the permanent exhibition of the municipal museum.
The following collections are also in the Braunschweig City Museum:
- The "Graphic Collection" contains around 50,000 works on paper, including 10,000 drawings. The focus is on artist graphics of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. An elementary component is the graphic estate of the architect Peter Joseph Krahe (1758–1840), which has been kept in the Braunschweig Municipal Museum since 1955. In addition to around 850 drawings by Krahe himself, around 450 drawings by other artists belong to the Krahe estate. Another special feature of the graphic collection is the guest book of the collector Otto Ralfs (1892–1955). The album contains drawings by artists of classical modernism, such as Lyonel Feininger, Alexej Jawlensky and Wassily Kandinsky. Drawings and prints can be viewed by prior arrangement.
