The Rum Diary is an American feature film directed by Bruce Robinson based on the novel of the same name, The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson . The film opened in theaters in the United States on October 28, 2011. The film opened in Germany on August 2, 2012.
The leading role of Paul Kemp was played by Johnny Depp , who also played the leading role of Raoul Duke in the Thompson film adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . Both characters - Kemp and Duke - are considered to be the alter egos of the writer Hunter S. Thompson.
action
The New York journalist Paul Kemp mostly only has short-term jobs. In 1959, he decides to travel to the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan . There he received the offer to work for the daily newspaper The San Juan Star . In addition to his work, Kemp also spends a lot of time in bars and with friends. He soon meets the attractive Chenault, who is engaged to the wealthy entrepreneur Sanderson. Sanderson wants Kemp to write a promotional brochure for him and other investors to convince the public to buy a hotel on a pristine island off Puerto Rico. After a night of partying and the suggestion of an affair with a local, Sanderson leaves Chenault, who then moves into Kemp's apartment and starts a relationship with him.
Meanwhile, the newspaper Kemp worked for is closing. His plan to print one last issue, in which he wants to expose the building project and the nefarious investors around Sanderson, fails because the bank has confiscated all printing machines. In the final scene of the film, he steals one of Sanderson's yachts and sails into the sunset. The credits indicate that Kemp Chenault, who moved to New York, married and became a successful journalist.
production
The film adaptation of the novel with the same title The Rum Diary was first planned in 2003. After Hunter S. Thompson's death in 2005, his friend Johnny Depp was particularly keen to ensure that it was completed quickly. The first shooting started on March 25, 2009 in Puerto Rico.

The consensus of the critics was: It's colorful and amiable enough, and Depp's heart is clearly in the right place, but The Rum Diary fails to add sufficient focus to its rambling source material. (He is colorful and lovable, and Depp has the heart clearly in the right place, but The Rum Diary does not manage to put a pointed emphasis on extravagant source material.) At Metacritic , the film received an average rating of 57 out of 100 points based on 34 reviews.
“In terms of content and technology, the Blu-Ray for RUM DIARY is nothing special and belongs to the average mediocre. The story of the journalist Paul Kemp babbles comfortably and leaves the actors no room to run to their top form. RUM DIARY wastes potential because the subject of the film would have more to offer. "
"The film perfectly captures the easy-going attitude towards life of the era before the Cuba crisis: with side trips to dim rum bars, illegal cockfights and bizarre voodoo priests, where even agnostic journalists ask for greater assistance."
