The SC stadium is a soccer stadium under construction in the Baden-Württemberg city of Freiburg im Breisgau . It will be the new home ground of the SC Freiburg football club . The facility is located in the Brühl district next to the city's airfield .

Features of the stadium

According to the design by HPP Architects from Düsseldorf , the football arena will be a stadium with a surrounding upper and lower tier, with the home stand behind the gate on the south side consisting of a continuous tier. The draft envisages a capacity of 34,700 seats, of which a high proportion of 36 percent (approx. 12,400 seats) are designated as standing room. The building will be 25 meters high and rectangular in shape. In addition to the office, the function rooms of the professional team and the U23 will also be integrated into the stadium.

history

The previous stadium of SC Freiburg, which in 1954 opened Dreisamstadion , no longer meets the requirements of a modern venue and must because of small pitch (100.5 m × 68 m), which from the gate in the south to the north gate direction Dreisam also has a gradient of 98 cm, can only be used on the basis of a special permit from the DFL . There have been discussions for some time about converting the stadium or building a new one. In order to check the profitability of a conversion solution, the SC commissioned a study from Freyler, according to which a conversion would take eleven years and would only cost slightly less than a new building. In spring 2012, the municipal council of the city of Freiburg also ordered a report from the auditing firm Ernst & Young , which calculated a conversion time of a maximum of three years, but also significantly higher costs. Accordingly, no “future-proof solution” would be possible at the old location, so that other locations were checked and compared with one another.

In December 2012, the Freiburg municipal council voted to build a new stadium and confirmed the examination of three possible locations.

The joint working group of the association and the city agreed on the Wolfswinkel location next to the airfield and the technical faculty of the university in the Brühl district. The advantages were seen in the good public transport connection and the possibility of setting up training areas on the site. Except for 200 m², which are owned by the university, the site belongs to the city. In addition, flight operations should still be possible. The Hettlinger allotment garden near the trade fair in the west of Freiburg and the Hirschmatten estate on the Mitte motorway feeder , which had also been examined as alternative locations for a new stadium, were rated as less suitable by the Freiburg municipal council in its resolution on February 25, 2014. On February 1, 2015, the citizens of Freiburg voted in a referendum with 58.2 percent in favor of the new stadium in Wolfswinkel.

The budget is 76 million euros. On November 16, 2018, the association received the building permit to build a new stadium at Wolfswinkel. Preparatory construction work began that same month. The stadium should be completed in 2020 with the start of the 2020/21 season. At the end of 2019, the foot and cycle bridge over the new access to the stadium (Suwonallee) on Granadaallee was opened. The other work is also on schedule, but there is no longer any time buffer.

The work on the roof structure has been noticeable since the beginning of 2020. In order not to hinder everyday traffic, the roof elements are brought to Freiburg by heavy load transport at night . On March 5, 2020, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on the construction site . The SC team made a tour of their new home.

Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic , the planned completion of the new SC home at the beginning of the 2020/21 season cannot be met. “There will definitely be delays in building the stadium. At this point in time, however, the extent cannot be reliably predicted ”. This was stated by SC CFO Oliver Leki in an interview with the kicker in April 2020 . For the licensing for the 2020/21 season, the Sport-Club specified the Dreisamstadion as the venue in addition to the SC stadium. In July it was announced that the stadium would not be ready until the end of 2020 and that the sports club could possibly move after the winter break.

Noise protection and lawsuits

In May 2019, the Freiburg Administrative Court rejected a construction freeze in an urgent procedure initiated by six residents. The plaintiffs filed a complaint against this in June. The Freiburg glider pilots withdrew their lawsuit against the stadium, however, as they received a new grass runway in 2019.

The Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg decided on October 2, 2019 that comparatively high noise protection standards must be observed for the use of the stadium. This means that no game can last longer than 8 p.m. during the whole week and, in addition, no game on Sunday can fall between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Different rules apply to non-sporting events.

A few hours after the judgment was published on October 23, 2019, it became known that the court had justified the judgment on the basis of outdated noise limits (valid until 2017). SC Freiburg assumes that the current limit values can use the venue without restrictions. The ruling attracted attention nationwide and in the UK. On May 20, 2020, the administrative court granted the complaint of the state of Baden-Württemberg to the approval of games in the new SC stadium in full. Thus, the decision of October 23, 2019 is void and a new decision will be made on the matter.

Ownership and Financing

The stadium is owned by Stadion Freiburg Objektträger GmbH & Co. KG, whose shares are wholly owned by the City of Freiburg. The city brought the property into the company as a contribution in kind , the SC Freiburg as an atypical silent partner a capital contribution of at least 15 million euros, which is up to an upper limit of 20 million euros every year in the Bundesliga by one million Euros increased. The third participation in the trade fair was the silent participation of the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus of 12.78 million euros. The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports subsidized the stadium with 16.2 million euros. The remaining 32.7 million euros were to be financed through loans . In July 2018 it was announced that Rothaus would withdraw from the financing and that SC Freiburg would take over the share and finance it through a loan. After completion, the company will lease the stadium to SC Freiburg, which pays up to 3.8 million euros net annually in the Bundesliga and up to 2.5 million euros net annually in the 2nd Bundesliga .

Compensatory measures

For the construction of the soccer arena, the traffic areas and the training area, compensatory measures have been set on an area of around 70 hectares, for which the city is investing a good ten million euros, around half of which is intended for compensating for the meager lawn . Almost ten hectares of acidic grassland will be removed during the construction, this must be compensated for on 16 hectares due to its high value. Eight hectares were selected for this on the former Eichelbuck landfill, 5.3 hectares at Bremgarten airfield , 1.5 hectares at Tuniberg and 1.2 hectares at the northern airfield. The plans had been in progress in part since the 2015 referendum. In July 2019, four hectares of poor grass had already been created on the Eichelbuck. This measure should be completed by 2021. For this purpose, lean grass turf and seeds are taken from the biotopes of the stadium construction area and placed on the acorn hump so that typical plant species and insects can settle on the compensation area. After just a few months, there was a great similarity, not only in the plants, to the biotopes at the airfield, as a study in 2018 showed. To keep it that way, you have to mow several times in summer. The compensatory measures at the northern airfield and at Bremgarten airfield have been completed. In Bremgarten, part of the previous taxiways was unsealed. Another measure is the extensive grazing of an area on the renatured Elz near Köndringen with cattle, which at the same time is upgraded for the jackdaw .

Airport connection

Larger aircraft should also be able to land on the neighboring Freiburg airfield in the future. The operating company is already working on the approval. A new fire engine has already been purchased for this. If permission were given, the visiting team's planes could land right next to the stadium.
