The steam locomotives of the series SJS C of the Danish railway company Det Sjællandske Jernbaneselskab (SJS) had a B1 'wheel arrangement and were intended for the carriage of express trains .

The SJS and the Jysk-Fyenske Jernbaner remained with their own organizations under state control until the final merger of the mechanical engineering departments of the Danske Statsbaner (DSB) founded in 1885 in 1892 . After the transition from SJS to DSB, the locomotives were classified as DSB CS .

history

In the 1870s, the first double-coupled express train locomotives came to the Danish railways. The Jysk-Fyenske Jernbaner (JFJ) were one of the first to receive their series H locomotives with a B1 'wheel order and four 1'B locomotives from Hawthorn of the later DSB C (I) series . The SJS received six class D locomotives with the same wheel arrangement from Beyer-Peacock , later the machine works Esslingen delivered 12 locomotives of the class C with the wheel arrangement B1 '.

The Nordvestbane of the SJS from Roskilde via Holbæk to Kalundborg was opened on December 30, 1874. A year later, SJS received the first seven C series locomotives for operation on this route, which, as was customary in the company's early years, were given names: Fenris , Saga , Askur , Embla , Norne , Urda and Gylfe ( C 9, C 14, C 41-C 45) . Gere and Freke ( C 46 and C 47 ) followed in 1876 and Thor , Baldur and Odin ( C 6, C 8 and C 48 ) in 1877 . The order within the series was not assigned according to the year of construction. The manufacturer of the entire series was Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in Germany.

They were equipped with the two-axle tender, which in Denmark had the series designation "C".

The series name C had the SJS before the deployment of the new locomotives already on the Crampton locomotives of the Skirner and HC Ørsted awarded in 1875 they were in the series B redrawn.

Technical details

The machines showed structural similarities with existing SJS series on: The boiler of the SJS D , the coupled driving wheels which the SJS E .

The boilers of the first machines had a raised fire box . The transition to the standing boiler was made open in the first seven locomotives and formed in the other five locomotives by a short, conical connection, as was later used in the series A and B (I) built by the Esslingen machine factory . The screw brake of the tender was supplemented in the 1880s by a suction air brake acting on the locomotive and tender . The sloping cab roof had an extension to the rear, which meant that the staff was better protected in the rain.

In the late 1890s, considerations were made to swap the boilers. Three locomotives were decommissioned, the other nine equipped with a modern long boiler and a fire box in normal position. This allowed the pressure to be increased from nine to ten kg / cm². The steam dome was relocated to the long boiler and a Salter safety valve was installed. The collar on the chimney was removed and the driver's cab closed completely. Its roof was now only slightly curved and not inclined forward. At the same time, the brake was converted from a simple to an automatic suction air brake.

The first nine locomotives received new tenders ex works, the remaining three machines used used tenders that were available after the Thor and Roeskilde series were retired .

DSB CS

In 1885 the locomotives were taken over by Danske Statsbaner after it was founded. The classification in the series scheme with the CS series only took place after the merger of the independent mechanical engineering departments of the predecessor companies until 1893, with the S standing for the original Sjællandske Jernbaneselskab . The numbering was again not in chronological order according to the year of construction: C 6 became CS 249 , the further numbering is C 8 , C 9 , C 14 , C 41 to C 48 as CS 238 to CS 248 .

Calls

First the locomotives were in service on the Nordvestbane of the SJS. Later they took over services on the Nordbane ( Copenhagen - Hillerød - Helsingør ). Between 1901 and 1907 they could be seen on the Frederikssundbane ( Frederiksberg - Vanløse - Frederikssund ). A locomotive was handed over to Falster between 1910 and 1914 . Around 1910 the remaining seven locomotives came to Jutland and ran trains on the Bramming – Vedsted lines until 1915 and Langå – Silkeborg until 1920. After the German-Danish border was changed as a result of the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, the sections Skanderborg – Skjern, Vejle – Bramming, Tønder – Tinglev and Tønder – Højer their area of ​​operation.

Special

On July 11, 1897, the CS 245 hit a stationary passenger train with an express train in Gentofte station . 40 people died and 140 were injured.

The CS 238 was the first locomotive to be retired in 1898. This was followed by the CS 247 1900 and CS 248 1901. All others got new boilers between 1894 and 1897, with the CS 239 also receiving a new copper fire rifle and the CS 242 a new steel fire rifle.

The next withdrawal took place in 1906 with the CS 244 . The rest of the series was in use for even longer. It was not until 1925 that further stoppages began, which were completed in 1934 with the last locomotive, the CS 246 . This was given to the Danish Railway Museum. It has been exhibited in several locations, including the museum building in Odense , Viborg and Randers .

The tender of the CS 244 was used as a railway service vehicle from 1906 after the decommissioning of the locomotive by DSB and was given the designation Vandvogn No. 244 ( German water car ) with a capacity of 11,500 liters after a renovation in Centralværkstedet København . The car was stationed on Masnedø and was used to supply steam ferries with boiler feed water. In 1928 it was renamed Vandvogn No. 5 , came to Slagelse in 1938 , to Korsør in 1942 and was retired in 1942.  

The triaxial Tender the CS 247 was determined by the phasing of the locomotive to Brovægtsprøvevogn no. 3 ( German  Brückengewichtsprüfwagen ) converted, with scrap iron as ballast filled and provided with a roof. In Nyborg he was stationed retired 1937th
