geography

course

The Saarbach rises in Bliesgau at 320  m above sea level. NN on the slope between Aßweiler in the east-southeast and Ommersheim in the west. The Mandelbach spring is located about 1.7 km east of the Seine on the other side of the watershed between the Saar and its tributary Blies ; while the other side of the Mandelbach flows south to the Blies, the Saarbach runs mainly in a westerly direction to the Saar. Initially it flows in its Kerbsohlental through the Bliesgau biosphere reserve . It is  accompanied by Landesstraße 107 as far as Fechingen , almost the entire length .

Directly below its source, the water of the Saarbach has been dammed since 1971 in the nature reserve Gangelbrunnen recreational area to the Ommersheimer Weiher . In Ommersheim, the first small stream , which is partly piped in the sewer system , is barely noticeable. Only below the village and after the tributary of the Dalheimer Bach does the Saarbach shape the landscape. It flows through orchards , as is typical in the Bliesgau biosphere reserve .

After about three kilometers of its course, the Saarbach turns more to the south and takes in more backwaters from both sides. At the height of Ormesheim it swings back to the west with the confluence of the Ormesheimer Bruchbach . Here stood the Neumühle with the so-called “Sulgerhof” from 1563, of which remains from the second half of the 16th century have been preserved. Just under a kilometer below at about 240  m above sea level. NN Höhe is the old Bannmühle Gassenmühle , which belonged to the possessions of the Wadgassen Monastery , at the current border between the two districts of Saarpfalz in the east and Saarbrücken in the west . There, at the confluence of the Aubach, the brook leaves the Bliesgau biosphere reserve .

In the settlement area of the now reached Eschringen and up to the tributary of the Kimmbach , the Saarbach is contained, further below to the outdoor pool of Fechingen it meanders again almost unhindered. Below Fechingen, the brook has been spanned by its most important bridge structure since 1963, the 420 m long Fechingen viaduct on federal motorway 6 . The lower reaches of the Saarbach is designated as a floodplain of the Saar.

The Saarbach then flows through between Brebach and Güdingen and finally, after crossing under the federal highway 51 near the Rohrbach, flows into the same old arm trunk of the Saar as this one.
