Sacrament is the fifth studio album by the American metal / groove metal band Lamb of God . It was released on October 13, 2006 by Epic Records and reached number eight in the US album charts . The song "Redneck" was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the Grammy Awards .

Emergence

The creation of the album was accompanied by major problems. While the musicians were not making headway in writing new songs, singer Randy Blythe suffered from writer's block. In addition, Blythe drank too much alcohol . The musicians set themselves the goal of simplifying the songs without losing the progressive approach. In contrast to the two previous albums As the Palaces Burn and Ashes of the Wake, the lyrics are less politically colored.

In an interview, singer Randy Blythe stated that he devoted himself to his inner demons while writing the lyrics . The themes are women , the music business and alcohol addiction . In total, the band wrote 15 songs, eleven of which were used for the album. Produced and mixed was Sacrament of "Machine". The album was mastered by Brian Gardner and Vlado Miller. Music videos were shot for the songs “Redneck” and “Walk with Me in Hell” .

The German magazine Metal Hammer named Sacrament album of the month. Conny Schiffbauer from the German magazine Rock Hard described Sacrament as "one of the most intoxicating and, despite all the stylistic differentiation, most uncompromising metal records of the year" and awarded nine out of ten points. Michaela Putz from the online magazine laut.de described the album as “a sacrament that one can confidently receive”. Michael Hinterholzer from the online magazine metal1.info , however, criticized the fact that the album shows fewer details than Ashes of the Wake and that the melodic parts of the album are repeated far too often and awarded six out of ten points.

Sacrament debuted at number eight on the US album charts and sold 62,000 copies in the United States in the first week after its release. However, the musicians were less impressed by the album's entry into the top ten in the USA:

“I don't care at all. I got a call from our management, after which I ran straight into the garden to mow the lawn. "

- Randy Blythe

For the song "Redneck" Lamb of God were nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Metal Performance . These were held on February 11, 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles . The prize went to Slayer for the song "Eyes of the Insane". The album was awarded a gold record in July 2012 in Canada and in September 2019 in the USA .
