Semarang (old spelling: Samarang ) is a port city in Indonesia on the north coast of Java with 1,289,500 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Jawa Tengah province at the mouth of the Semarang River .
overview
The first Dutch-Indian railway connected the port with Tanggung in 1867 , it was the seat of the administration of the Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg and several private railways . In Semarang, Oei Tiong Ham founded the first multinational conglomerate in Southeast Asia.
The city has well-developed seaports from which sugar , copra , tobacco , coffee and rubber are exported. There are also shipyards , mechanical engineering and electrical industries as well as an important fishery. Shoes, textiles and glass are also manufactured.
The University of Diponegoro was founded in Semarang 1960th
Due to the uncontrolled extraction of groundwater and the drying out of clay layers, the soil in the city sinks by up to 15 centimeters every year, which leads to great economic damage. This is why the tide penetrates the streets of the city districts near the coast.
Another consequence of the overexploitation was the closure of the zoo and reopening at a location in Mangkang 15 km from the city in 2007.
