Samuel Liebmann
Samuel Liebmann (born November 12, 1799 in Aufhausen ; † November 21, 1872 in Williamsburg ) was a German brewer and founder of the S. Liebmann Brewery in Brooklyn . The main brand Rheingold Extra Dry , introduced after his death, was one of the most popular beer brands in New York from the 1940s to 1960s.
biography
Samuel Liebmann was born in Aufhausen, Württemberg (now a district of Bopfingen ) in 1799 . His parents were the businessman and religion teacher Joseph Liebmann and Berta Liebmann (née Fröhlich). He had three brothers (Heinrich, David and Leopold) and two sisters (Johanna, Sarah) and attended primary school in Aufhausen.
In June 1828 Liebmann married Sara Selz. When father Joseph Liebmann died in 1832, Samuel Liebmann and his brother Heinrich left their hometown Aufhausen and bought the Schloss Schmiedelfeld estate . They operated this with economic success.
In 1840 Liebmann moved to Ludwigsburg . There he acquired the “Zum Stern” inn with an attached brewery , which he also ran successfully. In the course of the German revolution he showed himself to be a supporter of the revolutionary movement. This led to the fact that the royal soldiers, who were regular customers up to this point, were forbidden to stop at Liebmanns Gasthaus by order. This ban and the failure of the German revolution led to his decision to emigrate to America .
In 1850 he sent his son Joseph to America to build a new home there. Four years later, Samuel Liebmann followed with the rest of the family.
There the family signed a lease for the Maasche Brewery on Meserole Street in Williamsburg , which was renamed S. Liebmann Brewery with the arrival of the family. After the lease expired, Samuel Liebmann built a new brewery under the same name on the corner of Forest and Bremen Street in Bushwick .
Liebmann's wife died in 1865. Three years later he retired from the active business of the brewery. Under his leadership, the company had grown steadily.
Samuel Liebmann died in his home in Williamsburg in 1872. He is buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery , Brooklyn. His sons took over the management of the brewery.
