The Alto Tapiche district is located in the Requena Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 20, 1946. It has an area of ​​9068 km². The 2017 census counted 1667 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1793, in 2007 it was 1947. The district administration is located in the 121  m high village of Santa Elena with 691 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santa Elena is located 110 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Requena .

Geographical location

The Alto Tapiche district is located in the Amazon lowlands in the central southeast of the Requena province. The district comprises the upper catchment area of the Río Tapiche . The Sierra del Divisor National Park extends partly over the southeast of the district.

The Alto Tapiche district is bordered to the west by the district Emilio San Martin , in the north and northeast on the district Tapiche , on the east by the districts Soplin and Yaquerana , in the southeast of Brazil , on the south by the district Callería ( province of Coronel Portillo ) and in Southwest to the districts of Contamana ( Ucayali province ) and Maquía .
