The Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport is an airport near the city of Saskatoon in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan . It is used exclusively for civil purposes. The airport is named after John Diefenbaker , the thirteenth Prime Minister of Canada.

The airport has 9 boarding gates , 34 check-in counters and a customs / immigration control, where international flights are handled. Some of the eight passenger boarding bridges can handle larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747. The airport is certified for international flights by the Canadian air traffic control NAV CANADA . The Canada Border Services Agency is responsible for arriving international passengers . In 2001 the airport counted 800,000 passengers, which makes it the largest in the province. In 2005 the number rose to over 900,000 passengers. In 2007 over a million passengers were counted. With a passenger volume of 1.46 million and 95,962 aircraft movements, the airport was one of the twelve largest in Canada in 2017.

Airport facilities

The airport has a terminal that has been expanded several times due to the increasing number of passengers. There is also an airport fire brigade, several hangars and cargo halls. There are several shops, restaurants and cafés in the terminal. The terminal was last renovated and enlarged in 2005. In 2010 the further expansion of the terminal by seven passenger boarding bridges with enlarged check-in and waiting areas began. Due to the increasing number of passengers, the terminal was enlarged again until 2015. Since then, it has has nine piers equipped.

The airport operator, the Saskatoon Airport Authority , announced that between 2009 and 2018 investments of $ 70 million will be spent on expansion plans and infrastructure rehabilitation.

For some years now, Saskatoon Airport has also been increasingly used as an aircraft graveyard , where aircraft are parked during temporary shutdowns, or else cannibalized and recycled. 23 Fokker F28 Fellowships from Jazz Aviation and Canadian Regional Airlines were permanently parked there.
