Place of the event

The murder of Witten is the murder of 33-year-old Frank H. by the couple Daniel and Manuela Ruda from Witten in the Ennepe-Ruhr district on July 6, 2001. The Bild newspaper coined the term Satansmord von Witten . Subsequent media reports led to parts of the black scene being suspected of Satanism .

procedure

Frank H., a colleague of Daniel Ruda's work, was lured into the newly married couple's apartment under the pretext of holding a farewell party. There he was murdered and dismembered with 66 stab wounds, hammer blows and a machete .

A day later the body was discovered in the apartment, which also contained upside-down crosses , skulls, a coffin and victory grunts . The Rudas had fled, but after a week they could be found by the police near Jena . The couple's carriage was decorated with occult ornaments and lettering; the fugitives had shaved their heads as camouflage.

Trial and Judgment

The body was identified through DNA analysis . In the trial before the Bochum district court, Daniel Ruda and his partner spoke of the devil who drove them to the murder. Both were in January 2002 to imprisonment sentenced Daniel Ruda, and in addition to fifteen years and Manuela Ruda to thirteen years in the forensic admitted. The public prosecutor's office had each demanded a year less. Because of a narcissistic personality disorder , which , according to the expert Norbert Leygraf , was present in both perpetrators, the judges assumed reduced criminal liability . The accused couple divorced shortly after the trial.

At the beginning of July 2011, Daniel Ruda's defense attorney, Hans Reinhardt, applied for his client to be released after two-thirds of the term of his sentence and for the remaining sentence to be suspended. However, after the hearing, the responsible criminal chamber decided against early release and justified this primarily with the unwillingness to seek therapy. Daniel Ruda remained in psychiatry until 2004 and has been serving his sentence in the Bochum correctional facility since then due to his refusal of therapy . Manuela Ruda, on the other hand , was open to therapy in the Eickelborn psychiatry and reached a guarded exit. She is now at large again. In 2016, Daniel Ruda was charged again for allegedly planning the murder of his ex-wife while in prison in 2010. He was acquitted of this allegation, however. He has now been released from custody too.

background

Manuela Ruda turned to the Gothic scene at the age of 13 and later described herself as a follower of Satanism . According to acquaintances, she also saw herself as a dominatrix and worked as a BDSM model. She felt like a vampire and drank the blood of her partner, who also drank her blood.

When Satan Lives was written on a window in the apartment . The police also found a list of names of people in the apartment who were then placed under police protection. On their escape, the Rudas visited the cemetery where Sandro Beyer's grave is located, according to the Berliner Zeitung, with the intention of desecrating Beyer's grave.

The couple also had contact with the neo-Nazi scene. One of Daniel Ruda's closest friends, whom he had often visited, is an active neo-Nazi from Moers . Ruda, who previously lived in Herten in the Recklinghausen district , was nominated in 1998 by the chairman of the Recklinghausen NPD district association , Wolfgang Kevering, as an electoral assistant for the upcoming federal elections. Daniel Ruda was also present for the party's central election campaign demonstration, which took place in Rostock on September 19, 1998 . After the election campaign he withdrew from the neo-Nazi scene and turned to the gothic metal scene.

Book publications

Three years after the conviction, Daniel Ruda's book Error Code 211, the "Satansmord" by Witten - what really happened . The title refers to the murder paragraph, Section 211 of the German Criminal Code .

In the book, Ruda stated that he invented the story of the devil's voice in court to protect his wife, whom he blamed for the murder. He himself had nothing to do with the murder and was not a Satanist. His former psychiatric expert Norbert Leygraf described these statements as "ridiculous" and the book as evidence of the narcissistic personality disorder from which Ruda suffered.

Manuela Ruda published a guest chapter in Rainer Fromm's book Schwarze Geister, Neue Nazis , in which she admits her guilt and states that at the time of the crime she "had long since lost sight of the real world and of respect for [her] fellow human beings". She distances herself from supporters of the black scene who took her act as a model, as well as the two acts of imitation known to her.

Influence on the black scene

The reporting of the mass media influenced the foreign image of the black scene, which was now increasingly confronted with the accusation of Satanism. When journalists investigated the black scene after the murder and some reports highlighted Satanism as an influencing factor in the movement, the magazines hardly commented on the crime. An exception was the Zillo , which tried to come to terms with what had happened. According to Fichtner and Sterneck, the two perpetrators in parts of the black scene were at times stylized as stars in the style of Charles Manson .

On the Rudas' getaway car there was also a sticker of the music project SOKO Friedhof , which was founded by David A. Line , on which the word "Grave Beauty" was written, named after the debut album Grave Beauty . In the media, the band was criticized for this and partly put in a context with the murder motif, as they used speech samples in songs like Und aß seine Herz that came from horror films that dealt with clichéd depictions of satanic rituals and sacrificial rites .

There was a sticker on the door of the apartment that said Kadaververwertungsanstalt - Bunkertor 7 , a song by the German music project Wumpscut . The founder of this music project, Rudy Ratzinger, was also criticized as the motivator for the murder and was questioned several times in the press on the subject. With songs like War, he calls for violence and murder. Similar allegations were made against him after the Kauhajoki rampage in 2008. Ratzinger published a collage of various press reports called Ruda on the Internet, which, according to his own statement, should be rated as a "reaction to what happened".
